It's over 50 degrees. Nuff said. Except...thank God!
So, do you eat breakfast? Do your kids?
If you answered "No", you really should be eating breakfast and, more importantly, your kids should be too!
A recent study showed that most kids do not eat breakfast and this could be contributing to childhood obesity. (And, for that matter, adult obesity)
Why?
Well, because truly, your body is like a furnace and if you get up in the AM and don't eat breakfast, you're keeping your metabolism slow, just like it was all night while you slept. And, to burn calories and fat, you've got to 'rev up' your metabolism. It's just a fact.
But, you say, I don't 'like' traditional breakfast foods and I'm tempted to grab a 'drive through' breakfast sandwich...STOP. Do not go through that drive through and say "Can I have a sausage/egg/cheese sandwich please." There are things you can eat in a hurry (and can be non-traditional breakfast foods) that will do the trick without all that fat!
(Sidebar-I personally detest 90% of traditional breakfast food myself...I think you all know my famous disklike of eggs!)
Here are some ideas:
-Wheat toast with peanut butter and a glass of OJ
-2 pieces of wheat or whole grain toast with some cheese and a sliced tomato on top-stick that under your toaster oven on BROIL-YUM, glass of milk
-On the weekend, make some blueberry pancakes for the family (make them 1/2 dollar sized, smaller ones are fun and keep portions in check) and then freeze some extras in 1-2 pancake bags. You can pull them out the first thing in the AM and by the time you're dressed you can microwave them quick or even take them with you to eat in the car! (Blueberries are SO good for you!) So you've done something terrific for the family and made a healthy plan for your week too!
-Take 1 slice of pre-cooked turkey bacon (or real bacon if don't have it often) and microwave, toast an english muffin or toast and add a piece of cheese. VOILA, you have your own 1-2 minute AM sandwich (egg lovers you could even add 1 egg quickly scrambled). You save money AND calories!
-Cold slice of the veggie pizza you made at home Sunday night! (Yes, cold pizza is ok-in a pinch!)
-1 slice turkey, cheese, tomato, green pepper on toasted bread. Sounds like lunch? Can be breakfast too!
We could go on and on but you get the point, right? Eat some protein, get your dairy in there, some veggie or fruit (also good 'on the go' breakfast-apple, banana, etc.) and you're good to go. Just don't SKIP breakfast or opt for one of those 'granola bars'. Those are good in a pinch or on the road but read the back...do you know what's IN those things??!!!
So, when you get up tomorrow-get some breakfast in that tummy and get that metabolism rev'd up!
See you in class!
