Yes, it's cold and yes there was some snow flying earlier but tomorrow? 65 degrees! Hang in there folks!
In an effort to continue to share both fitness, health and other great tips...
Check out www.zakkerz.com. It's a website that sells these nifty little items that change your longer (read=wear with heels) jeans/pants to shorter (read=wear with flats) in a snap! I just got mine and they are inexpensive and do the job! Now your fave pair of 'going out' jeans can also be your 'running around doing errands' jeans too! (And we all need to save money now so having that 1 pair of great jeans (which I personally bought at Nordstrom on Friday) saves moola and looks good on that butt you've worked so hard on in class!
And, Nordstrom? AWESOME.
While I was there (again, there was snow flying then too) I pretended I was home in SoCal and at the mall in SB. That 'pretending' lasted until I got back outside...ack!
I also found a really great and well priced (read=cheap) face cream and scrub. I heard about it on the Today show and it ROCKS! (And you can buy it at CVS!) It's 24/7 face cream and cleanser. Check it out! (Oh and if you buy it don't like it-I'll take the rest off your hands!)
Well, those are our tips for today...
Challengers, you're all doing SO great-how do you feel? Are you seeing changes in your body (even little ones) yet? Measurements are week of 4/21...don't forget!
Have a great day and see you in class!

Getting the 'health' bug!
Well, Dan got voted off in last night's BL show...I wondered when one of the guys would finally go. He will do great at home since he has really embraced healthier living. He's got the 'bug' if you will...
What is the 'bug'?
Well, it's when you eat even a little better and really FEEL how good that is. It's also when you dedicate yourself to getting your exercise in 3-5x per week and really FEEL how good THAT is!
Sometimes folks give up before they see changes and let the 'bug' get to them. You've seen it on the show, right? Folks who get voted off earlier in the season and aren't exactly embracing the healthy lifestyle when you seem them in the finale. It's heartbreaking for those of us who work hard everyday to help folks get on the healthier path. You feel like you just want to shake them and say, "Don't you get it? This is for YOU!!!"
I sometimes say that to you all in class..."You can *not* work hard, but I can work hard for myself, I push you for YOU...so YOU can feel your body work and know that you can do it."
The point is-don't give up before you get the 'bug'. Living healthier doesn't mean eating perfectly, looking perfectly or exercising on some rigid schedule; it just means doing your best with your eating 5 days a week, exercising on a schedule that works for you (but that you don't skip out on all the time!) and looking like your best self.
I mean, look at Dan from the show-the changes in his body are radical as are the changes in his attitude. He knows now that he can do anything he puts his mind to. He didn't realize that before.
Let yourself be open to all the possibilities in your life-no matter your age. Dream. Plan. Set goals. You can start by working on YOU, the outside, and you just might find that YOU, the inside, gets better too.
And don't get discouraged when you don't see changes overnight. Keep on plugging away-keep trying, do your best. Every class is another step in the journey to being healthier and remember,
Success is a journey, not a destination!

"It's a blustery day", said Winnie the Pooh
And it is. Very blustery.
Basically, I've shoveled (I mean swept) about 3 lbs. of sand out from in front of the Center.
Speaking of Winnie the Pooh...
He accepted all his friends in the 100 acre wood, no matter their size, shape or, for that matter species. Really, they found out they were more alike than different.
And, so are we-more alike than different that is.
So, as you go about your weekend, whether you celebrate Easter, Passover or some other holiday-let's remember how alike we really are. We all want to be happy, prosperous, healthy...we want all to be heard, be validated, feel liked and be loved.
Because, whether your 6 or 60, short or tall, thin or not-so-thin...at heart, we all want the same things.
And sometimes we lose sight of just how alike we are and we forget to respect each other or forget to listen to each other. I know sometimes I forget and I am really working on that. I think it's really important.
So, let's recognize our sameness the next time we're all together. We're all just trying to 'make it' in the world and we can certainly do it more easily together, working as a team.
And, frankly, I'm glad you're all on our team!

Makeover motivation!
Did you all see the Biggest L*ser last night? If not, here's a recap...
Maggie got voted off in the beginning of the show. The rest of the crew got makeovers and they all look so awesome! Tim Gunn helped with those makeovers and picked wonderful outfits for each person. They will appear in Prevention magazine in the current issue!
In hearing their comments after their makeovers were complete, it reminds us all why we work out and try and eat as healthy as possible. Yes, it's terrific to buy new clothes and all but it's even better to be able to DO the things you want in life. So many people (and all those on the BL TV show) struggle with weight at different times in their lives, or all their lives, and they can't do certain things.
They can't ride on major theme park rides, buy clothes in a 'regular' store, fit in one airline seat or even in a small bathroom stall and you know what? That s*cks. I was personally never large enough that it impeded me in those ways, but it sure did in other ways.
And, once you lose the weight you're almost not sure who you are! Many of us still dress the 'larger' body that was there before-buying larger sizes than we need. I was lucky, I had K to go shopping with me (yes, she DID shop back then-at least for a little while, HAHA) and remind me that I wasn't a certain size anymore. I still struggle with that, at times buying clothes a bit too large and having to return. I need to try everything on and, even now, I won't buy certain things that I'm sure would look good on me, but I still that larger girl I used to be.
And, this is why we measured you for the Challenge instead of weighing you. We want to quantify all your work and really let you SEE the changes, even if you can't yet fully feel them.
So, try and really SEE yourself when you look in the mirror and say GOOD things about yourself. And, if you're one of those folks who nitpicks at yourself constantly, try putting some positive affirmation on your mirror on a little sticky note...just one NICE thing about YOU! (and each person in your family could have their own sticky too)
Because, just like those courageous folks on the BL TV show...you need to really *feel* the wonderful changes health and fitness bring and enjoy the moment!

It's spreading...like wildfire!
Ladies,
2 days until Spring is officially here! YIPPEE!
Challengers (aka those participating in the Spring Challenge)-remember, we live in the real world where this is cake (here today for KT's 3rd Jazzerversary) and other yummy temptations. It's OK to have a treat, just journal it and keep it in perspective! If you have a 'treat' dessert at lunch, have fruit after dinner! (Oh and work harder in class! WINK WINK)
How is our Challenge spreading you may ask? Well, the Center in Pepp is planning to start theirs soon! D, the Pepp Owner, has floated the idea to her folks and they like it! Her challenge will also be to have them refer friends to class too-working out with a buddy is ALWAYS a plus! We wish our friends up in Pepp a great Challenge and we can't wait to see their results too!
We hope you're all having a great day and see you in class!

Spring Challenge starts TODAY!
Ladies,
It's blustery and sunny out...a great day to start our Spring Challenge!
For those who signed up...62 in all...mark each class you come to on the chart (you *must* be measured first so we can give you a code and put your 1st measurements up). Also, if you have *not* done so, please pick up your food journal and start journaling.
We were chatting yesterday and some folks wondered why we didn't weigh you. Well, it's our feeling that we want this challenge to be positive and focus on measurements. As women, we get so many negative messages out in the world-if you're not a size 0 (now a 00) you're not 'worthy'. We all know that's crap. And, who cares what you weigh? As Dr. Oz says on the "O" show-your waist measurement should be 1/2 of your height in inches for 'heart health'. Why? Those who carry their weight in their mid-section have a higher rate of heart disease. So, we're focusing on measurements to quantify how hard you work in class AND to whittle those waists for your HEALTH. It's a healthy competition and really helps us all focus!
Others have asked "Why do we have to journal our food?" Well, because nutrition is equally as important as exercise in this equation of health. Some folks have questioned why we're starting Easter week with all the chocolate bunnies and treats. Well, just because you're journaling your food does NOT mean you can't have a chocolate bunny! (And, don't forget, if you normally bite the ears first-try the tail this time...just for fun!) Have your treats and your special meal this week (for those celebrating Easter)...but write it down and LOOK at it. Stay honest for yourself and you'll see results!
So, as we always say, try and make good food choices at least 5 days per week...build in 1 cheat day and let us help you stay focused. We are SO thrilled with how many of you are participating and how excited you are to do so. We see that 'light' in your eyes and we know that, together we can get healthier, look better and have fun all at the same time!
Have a great day and see you in class!

Should we ban 'bans'??
Ladies...
It's Friday and it's a little gray out but...Spring is coming! Hang on!
K and little K are off to VA for a soccer tourney. I'm sure they'll have a ton of fun and, hopefully, win too!
I was listening to the radio today as I drove around doing my errands and they were talking about banning trans fats in Boston. As you know, many Cities and Towns have banned trans fats in restaurants and Boston is even doing it with prepared foods in supermarkets.
Now, as a fitness professional, I am all for banning trans fats from our diets...BUT, shouldn't we take responsibility for keeping those things out of our foods ourselves? I mean, we're banning smoking in many establishments and outside the front doors of many establishments (which I totally support) but folks can still smoke if they wish. (I am for personal choice, though I do loathe smoking personally.) But, you really can't go into a restaurant and say, "Can I have mine WITH trans fats?" once they are banned. I mean, I don't think folks should smoke but they need to make that choice themselves. And, I don't think folks should eat a trans fat laden diet but...they need to choose wisely for themselves!
We've banned peanut butter sandwiches from many schools, as well as cupcakes and other, HORRORS, awful things like birthday cake, yet we allow the cafeteria to serve foods loaded with trans fats, in many cases much worse for kids than a cupacke. We're trying to ban cell phones while driving, yet we allow folks to change clothes, whack their children who are misbehaving in the backseat, drink and drive multiple times without consequences or eat their fast food while driving.
I know I know, there are many kids allergic to peanuts in school and it can be deadly. Ok, well WHY are there so many kids allergic to peanuts? There weren't when I was in school (admittedly, in the 'old days'). And, shouldn't parents teach their peanut allergic kids NOT to take food from others, given their allergy? Shouldn't we teach kids to 'make a choice' for themselves? Shouldn't we be researching the cause of all these peanut allergies? And, seriously, why can't Moms bring in cupcakes for a kid's birthday? Really? But they can eat C R A P in the cafeteria every, single day?
>>Is this making sense to you, because it doesn't to me!<<
And you don't want me talking on the celly while driving? Well, I'm going to have to so I can call in the DRUNK driver who just passed me, doing 90+ on Rte. 495, swerving side to side and about to kill someone. (And it's not their first violation and they are still out here!) Or, I need to call while I driving to report that parent in the front of the minivan who is literally beating the he** out of her kid WHILE she's speeding through red lights on Rte. 110.
Honestly, we wonder why people feel no personal responsibility anymore? Are you kidding? It's because we want to 'ban' everything so everyone says, "Well, driving down the highway painting my toenails wasn't banned, so I figured it was ok." "You didn't BAN crossing the street without looking so I figured I didn't have to look. I still don't get why I got hit by that car!"
D U H.
I guess my overall point is...THINK. We all have perfectly good brains and reasoning skills, let's use them. Our parents taught us consequences-if you touch a hot burner you will get burned. Our parents didn't 'ban' the stove so we wouldn't get burned, we had to learn not to touch it, right?
If you smoke your incidence of diseases that kill is higher.
If you eat a diet high in trans fats you risk obesity and all its complications and those could kill you.
If you are allergic to peanuts and eat them, you may die.
And if you don't use your brain and take personal responsibility for your own life-your brain could atrophy and, there again, you could die.
I do know some things needed to be banned for the safety of all but could we please use common sense or, soon, EVERYTHING will be banned!

Spring Challenge begins Monday!
Our Spring "Biggest Loser" challenge starts Monday and we have almost 60 participants! Way to go folks!
Make sure you stop and see A or KL for your first set of measurements...remember, these are much more telling than your weight. It's how your clothes fit that matters and your weight will take care of itself-we promise!
Starting Monday, you'll mark each time you attend class (up to 50x during the 12 weeks) and we'll measure you at the beginning, week 6 and week 12. Make sure you pick up your food journal and journal *every* morsel starting Monday...this keeps you honest for YOU! You don't have to review your food journal with us, but be honest with yourself every day and look at it each week. You will see the 'holes' in your nutrition and be able to make better choices! And, always build a 'cheat day' in each week-this keeps your metabolism running and keeps you from getting 'bored' with eating healthfully.
Good luck and enjoy this focused approach on yourself! You deserve the best and we can help you get it here at the J!
See you in class.

-Updated J logos (just like the new ones on our 'poles' in the studio room)
-New carpet in the 'shoe changing' area
-Consolidation of our history of photos with one of our awesome associates, JFenn, doing a scrapbook for us! (Some pics will be left up in a special area!)
-A new closet in the babyroom for all our, ahem, crap. (You know, the stuff we don't need all of you having to look at!)
We are very excited and we are going to need painting helpers...so please email us if you'd like to help (dates to be announced). We will provide lunch, music and FUN! Email today and be a part of our new look-designed to make a great place even better!

A Blessed Life
Sunny, kind of cold but we're getting there...
A Blessed life...that is what we have for sure.
This weekend was our Awards meeting and while PMS and some little things weren't helping for a glittering mood, it was a good time. (For instance, could there just have been turkey on the cold cut platter? Please? I can't stomach 3 italian salami's, I just can't. But, the thought was there and we did appreciate the food!) Overall, we are totally blessed.
Really, we never intended things to go this well. We figured, oh, we'd have some classes (started here with 11 and now have 30) and some instructors (started with me, K and L and now have 10 total!) and some students (we have over 5000 people in our box).
I think we all have moments when we just can't see anything good-and we forget how good we really have it. That was definitely me this weekend.
Because, in reality, my BIL is in a coma in FLA and may die. And, here I am feeling good and running a successful business and, really, having a damn good life. And J is in FLA praying by J's bedside. I really have ZERO to complain about. And, I do know it's ok to complain sometimes but it's NOT ok to forget just how good you really have it.
So, I'm letting go of wishing there was turkey (or at least roast beef) on that table yesterday and anything other stupid little things from the meeting (like some people who just CANNOT be happy for their peers, because their too damn jealous!)and I'm hanging on to knowing that:
1. I am a lucky, lucky girl
2. I have a bunch of people around me who support what we do wholeheartedly
3. And I'm doing just what God Himself intended for me
So, thanks to our BEYOND fabulous staff of instructors, class managers and babysitters and all of our customers who, once again, put us at the TOP of our District for year #10...we are forever greatful!

Friday Feature-tips for the weekend!
TGIF people!
The sun is shining...for now. We are due for a deluge of water tonight and into tomorrow. Remember, only 'witches' melt, so make sure you get up and out to class!
As the weekend rolls around, we all have places to go and people to see. How do you stay on track with showers, parties, date night with the husband or running around dropping kids off at their different activities? Here are some tips:
-If you've got parties to go to, don't go HUNGRY. Make sure you eat something healthy before you leave the house. If you arrive ravenous, you'll just hit up the appetizer table as if it were the meal! And, drink a whole bottle of water on the way to your event...this will also help you ease into the party (food-wise) and not park yourself in front of the dip! And, if you've been asked to bring something to contribute to the food items, make yours healthy so you know you'll have at least something good to fall back on in the middle of all those high fat treats!
-Going out to dinner? Again, don't go STARVING or that bread basket may have to be refilled a few times! In fact, don't let your server even put that bread basket on the table! You could seriously take in 200-300 calories before your appetizer and drinks arrive! And, think about splitting the appetizer and dessert with your significant other or friend. And, by the way, how BIG IS THAT ENTREE???? If it'll feed a small country then don't eat the whole thing. I know...you love it, that's why you chose that restaurant but seriously, do you need 3 cups of pasta in one meal? Uh, no. You can enjoy it tomorrow for lunch if you just pace yourself and eat 1/2! Does this take a little discipline? Uh, yeah. But only YOU are responsible for what goes into your mouth...and you'll feel better too!
-Running around all day Sat. dropping kids off at soccer, birthday parties or sitting at hockey practice? Pack some good snacks for you and the kids and avoid the drive thru! Even bringing fruit or crackers will help fuel the kids for practice and save you money!
-And, speaking of saving money...did you know that simply packing your lunch for work 2 weeks out of the month can save you $100 or more??? Plus, you can make that sandwich just like you want it without 'hoping' the guy or gal behind the counter does what you ask! Less stress AND more money!!! Oh and coffee...now I love a DD coffee just like all of you. But, I decided to make my coffee (I do by the DD ground coffee I like) at home Monday through Friday...this saves me over $500 per year and once you get in the habit-it's great! I don't have to worry about sugar in my coffee (I like mine cream only) and that money gets used for holiday shopping!
Right now we're all looking for tips to be healthy and fit AND save some money (because, let's face it, all the funds we have MUST go into that gas tank right now...) so we hope this tips inspire and help you all!
See you in class!

What is your 'real age'???
The sun is shining, the seagulls have returned to the Center parking lot (oh joy) and I do believe we might be on the upswing 'weather wise'...(knock on wood).
Have you checked out realage.com? If not, hop on over there and take the Real Age quiz. Those are the 2 docs featured on the "O" show and they are fabulous...so much good information. It asks you a ton of questions and really gives you a good idea of how you're doing! And, remember, your biological age is much more important than the 'numeric' one!

Breakfast of Champions!
It's over 50 degrees. Nuff said. Except...thank God!
So, do you eat breakfast? Do your kids?
If you answered "No", you really should be eating breakfast and, more importantly, your kids should be too!
A recent study showed that most kids do not eat breakfast and this could be contributing to childhood obesity. (And, for that matter, adult obesity)
Why?
Well, because truly, your body is like a furnace and if you get up in the AM and don't eat breakfast, you're keeping your metabolism slow, just like it was all night while you slept. And, to burn calories and fat, you've got to 'rev up' your metabolism. It's just a fact.
But, you say, I don't 'like' traditional breakfast foods and I'm tempted to grab a 'drive through' breakfast sandwich...STOP. Do not go through that drive through and say "Can I have a sausage/egg/cheese sandwich please." There are things you can eat in a hurry (and can be non-traditional breakfast foods) that will do the trick without all that fat!
(Sidebar-I personally detest 90% of traditional breakfast food myself...I think you all know my famous disklike of eggs!)
Here are some ideas:
-Wheat toast with peanut butter and a glass of OJ
-2 pieces of wheat or whole grain toast with some cheese and a sliced tomato on top-stick that under your toaster oven on BROIL-YUM, glass of milk
-On the weekend, make some blueberry pancakes for the family (make them 1/2 dollar sized, smaller ones are fun and keep portions in check) and then freeze some extras in 1-2 pancake bags. You can pull them out the first thing in the AM and by the time you're dressed you can microwave them quick or even take them with you to eat in the car! (Blueberries are SO good for you!) So you've done something terrific for the family and made a healthy plan for your week too!
-Take 1 slice of pre-cooked turkey bacon (or real bacon if don't have it often) and microwave, toast an english muffin or toast and add a piece of cheese. VOILA, you have your own 1-2 minute AM sandwich (egg lovers you could even add 1 egg quickly scrambled). You save money AND calories!
-Cold slice of the veggie pizza you made at home Sunday night! (Yes, cold pizza is ok-in a pinch!)
-1 slice turkey, cheese, tomato, green pepper on toasted bread. Sounds like lunch? Can be breakfast too!
We could go on and on but you get the point, right? Eat some protein, get your dairy in there, some veggie or fruit (also good 'on the go' breakfast-apple, banana, etc.) and you're good to go. Just don't SKIP breakfast or opt for one of those 'granola bars'. Those are good in a pinch or on the road but read the back...do you know what's IN those things??!!!
So, when you get up tomorrow-get some breakfast in that tummy and get that metabolism rev'd up!
See you in class!

J-rated "EB" for every body!
Good morning ladies! (and any gents out there too)
Video games have ratings, movies have ratings, restaurants, hotels...many things are rated so we know what we are getting (hopefully) when we play the game, see the movie or whatever!
"J" has a rating too-it's for every body!
That was a tag line for us years ago and while it might be too outdated for a tee shirt now, it's still true and important!
Our youngest regular client is 13. She comes with her Mom and sister and has fun and is getting more fit every day. (Not that she isn't fit already...) They are a great family and are an inspiration to many in the room. In fact, we have so many 'mother/daughter' teams in class, I couldn't possibly name them all!
Our oldest regular client is 70. What can I say about "JB"? She is amazing. She not only inspires us (and all our staff) but she inspires clients of *all* ages who walk through our doors. You might think younger folks think "Oh, well, if SHE's doing it, it can't be that hard" but they do not think this. In fact, one of our younger girls (aged 19) stands right behind her and always has and seeing them dancing together is so much fun! And, besides, "JB" is just about the most full of life person in the entire room. She comes to about 5-6 classes a week and is the light in the room every single time! What a joy!
We also have a client who does triathlons, many who do road races, pregnant moms, doctors, nurses...and folks who have never worked out in their lives. And, they all participate together-pushing themselves to whatever limit they can safely-I mean, we show all the options so some use impact, some don't, some use weights and some don't. We are well trained to show it all so it's effective and safe for just about every body! (haha)
And you know what? Every is having a blast, laughing, dancing, working up a good sweat, getting a great workout and learning that, at heart, we're all the same. No matter our age we all want to feel better, look better and live a happy, active life.
So here's to the first Monday of March-with Spring in our grasp we can all feel like 'Spring chickens' no matter our age!
See you in class!
