Hanukkah, Christmas...and beyond!

Hi All,
It's the "Monday After" and I think we're all coming down from the 'sugar high' of holiday treats, new toys and shopping!
It was great to see you ALL in class this past weekend and the week is starting strong thus far!
Many have said that Xmas is too commercial and I do agree-but I have to admit, it is nice to give gifts (and see people's joy) and, honestly, to receive gifts too. (Although I DO NOT give gifts to 'get' gifts...FYI)
I am happy to say I stood in exactly ZERO lines this year-shopped online and/or during weekday mornings when everyone else was at work. No stress and I feel I got gifts for those I love that they will really use and appreciate!

We had a GREAT holiday at Villa P&P! Lilly had her 2nd Xmas and she was much more into the toys, wrappings and good food than last year. She was only 9 weeks old last Xmas and sat cuddled in my lap most of the day! This year she had her own plate of prime rib and lots of toys! (We celebrate both holidays in our house but save the gifts for Xmas eve.)

Mr. P&P always surprises me (I do give him a list and printouts of gift options to make it easy for him-he hates to shop. I certainly NEVER expect everything on my 'list') but this year I think I got everything on my wish list. Uggs (chocolate colored), my stocking cap from Coach and a great handbag I found in a little shop in Acton. It's a Big Buddha bag.
(Sidebar-Mr. P&P also got the things on his wish list, including a Garmin!)
Now, when I found this bag I just loved it, I didn't look at the tag (just at the price which was GREAT). Once I got the bag for a gift, I looked at the tag and noticed the name and that the Company was based out of my hometown, Santa Barbara CA. WOW!
I looked up the Company and it was begun by a college student, in Santa Barbara, who wanted to make stylish bags, at great prices, and shipped them out of his college dorm room. I love it!
This guy is definitely 'up and coming' and, as a small business person myself, I like to support entrepeneurs...so check it out:
www.ebigbuddha.com
You'll get a FAB bag for a TERRIFIC price and I just know you'll love it! I just wanted to share my review with you-I think we're all on the lookout for great products at a great price, right?
Anyway...
As the year comes to a close I think most of us are glad to see 2009 end. I don't know about you but I really felt, for the first time this year, that the world has gone stark raving MAD at times. I think we all learned a lot and can apply those lessons in 2010 to make it a much better year.
K and I would like to thank our incredible staff for all their hard work all year and thank all of YOU for attending class, bringing your friends and supporting our business for another year. We do know how lucky we are to be able to do this for a living. We had a dream, made it come true and you all solidified it...without you, it would not be real. Thank you.
So, here's to 2010-let's make it healthy, prosperous and happy for us all!

The "S" word

HI All,
Ok, I do realize it's December and Hanukkah starts Friday but WHAT THE HELL!!?? We are, once again, covered in SNOW (That's the 'S' word by the way...).
Hate, loathe, cannot stand, am over it!
Now that I've gotten that out let me make some suggestions:
1. If you are not comfortable driving in the snow, it's ok...STAY THE "H" home. Why? Because when you drive 10 mph (literally) down the street you are a HAZARD. Call me...I'll go get you milk to keep you off the street!
2. If you are a weather person on TV, cut the crap. You have no flippin' idea what it's going to do and, if you do, it's about 50% correct. Let's review-the rain was supposed to start in our area around 8am-try 1pm!
3. If you have some extra bread, peanut butter (unless you're allergic), canned foods, water and milk then you do NOT need to flock to the grocery store and by EVERYTHING in sight as if you will never leave your home again. It is NOT 1978 people and they have made some great advancements in plowing, planning and school/work closings in the last 31 years! Get over it.
4. For those of us who DO know how to drive in this stuff-remember everyone else has 'snow amnesia' and is going to be a complete MORON on the road-so no phone calls while driving in this stuff. Pay attention and stay away from those folks noted in #1 above.
5. If you're bringing your kids to the bus stop, I might suggest you do not STAND IN THE ROAD with them when it's snowing/sleeting and icy. Uh, if I have to stop short I will do my best to NOT hit you but use some common sense, will ya!
6. Everyone take a deep breathe and we'll get through this winter just like we do every other one...oh and come to class, it helps de-stress you, keep your reflexes sharp and it's warm in here and FUN!

Thank....Full

Hi Everyone,
Let me say I was SOOOO impressed with ALL the folks that showed up to our...15th Annual Thanksgiving Day class! We had almost 60 people present and it was AWESOME!
We are SO thankful for everything you give us each day-bringing your friends to class, smiling, laughing, working hard...you enrich our lives every day and THANK YOU!
On a personal note, I'm very thankful for my family-my super duper geek husband (thank God, or else we'd be computer-less right now!), my cute puppy dog daughter and all my fabulous friends-especially K, Mista, Little K and Little Mista. And, the W family (you know who you are Mrs. Manilow)...and all the other special people in my life.
I am HUGELY thankful for our fabulous teaching staff who make it possible for me to take the time to take care of myself and my 'defective' hips-so that I can keep teaching into my 50's...it goes without saying you are all daughters to me!
I know how blessed I am and I thank God for that every day.
Enjoy your Thanksgiving and we'll see you ALL in class tomorrow and over the weekend!
(Oh, and for those going out Black Friday shopping tomorrow-be careful, be smart and have fun!)

Happy 13th Birthday Little K!

Hi All,
Today is Little K's birthday and she's 13, can you believe it? I figured I'd write her a little letter here...
Dear Little K,
Thirteen years ago I remember it was a Tuesday, cold and a bit overcast. Your Mom called to tell me 'this is it' (you had given her a hint the night before) and it was time for Daddy to take Mom to the hospital and for your big day to come. I was working outside of J then and had to go to work but really didn't want to. I was so worried something would happen to you and Mommy...I couldn't even concentrate!
I think Mommy and I talked on the phone until she was really in pain and then I went off to work finally.
They sent me home early and, by then, you had arrived on the scene. Thank God everyone was safe!
I talked to Mommy and she wanted one thing-DIET COKE! I stopped and got some and then raced to LGH to see you. I was SOOOOO excited to finally meet you in person. I'd be talking to you in Mommy's tummy for months and months and to finally actually see you was so fun!
I held you when you were a few hours old and said what I'd said for months, "HELLLLOOOO Baby". You turned your head and looked at me like you knew me and that was it-love at first sight.
Fast forward 13 years and I can hardly believe you're a teenager now. I got to watch you learn to walk and talk. I got to watch you learn about the world and make your Mom smile like I've never seen. You've thrown up on me, made me laugh and made me cry telling me (when you were a toddler), "I love you THIS much Anna" (holding your little arms wide open).
In knowing your Mom all these years, I know all the dreams and hopes she's had for you-that you be kind, generous, funny, accomplished in sports, in school and in life. She hoped you'd be articulate, healthy and beautiful.
Well, you are all those things and more.
You are a great person, kiddo. I love you and I'm honored to be in your life and I can't wait to see what the next 13 years brings...
-High school
-Driving
-College-ARRGGHH
-Your first job
Lord. By then your Mom and I will be....wait for it...59! Honestly, I can't wait.
You make us all proud...so Happy Happy Birthday, Little K! Here's to MANY MANY more!

Rude

Hi Everyone,
We hope you had a great weekend. (Excluding last night's Pat's game-which we are NOT discussing...)
I heard something on the radio today about the rudeness level in our daily lives and I agree it's way too high.
Here are some things that bug the snot out of me:
-If someone holds a door open for me in a store or something I say, "Thank You". Do you? If I hold the door for someone and they blantantly walk by me saying nothing or not even making eye contact I say (loudly), "You're welcome". Just say thank you-why wouldn't you? I mean seriously.
-If you pull out in front of someone in traffic and do not make eye contact it does NOT mean they don't exist. Just so you know. I try not to pull out in front of people because it causes accidents!
-If I have to take a call on my celly in public I try and call the person right back or keep the convo short. By the way, I do not want to hear your entire fight with your man while you're in Home Goods shopping. And, when you yell in public WE CAN HEAR YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-We've never made a rule about turning off your celly at the Center but, could you unless you're on call for work? Thanks.
-And just because you're older than 60 does NOT entitle you to:
1. cut in front of me at the deli or register at the store
2. pull out in front of me as if you do not see me
3. stand with your cart blocking an entire aisle at CVS and then pretend you can't hear me when I say 'Excuse me' to try and get by you
4. Litter
5. Pull out a coin purse full of change and start counting out $5 for a purchase when there are thousands of people in line and I can SEE the $5 bill in your wallet! Jeez, have one of your kids teach you how to use the Coinstar machine for God's sake.
And, my advice to you if cell phones are new to your generation-DO NOT TALK AND DRIVE AT THE SAME TIME.
Let's all try and remember that there are other people in the world (other than ourselves) and let's see some consideration people. It takes 28 days to change a habit so if we all work together we can make the world a LESS rude place.
Thanks!

In Memory

Hi All,
One year ago today Ally went to heaven.
We think about her every day and she is actively in our lives with Lilly. We have a lovely photo of her in the living room with her collar on it and her ashes in a beautiful urn too. We talk about her all the time and Lilly actually does know 'Sissy' and when we say, "Let's go say HI to Sissy" she goes right the collar and hits it with her nose. We did not train her to do this-the first time she did we were flabbergasted and I think we both cried.
We keep a gate up to keep her out of the living room most of the time and she will sometimes go to the gate and bark. If I ask her, "Do you want to say HI to Sissy?" and open the gate, she goes right there to the collar. It's really phenomenal and something that gives us a lot of peace. We always feel like Ally is with us every day.

Letting go of someone you love is so hard but we know it was the right thing for her. She is at peace and happy and healthy. We believe she is in heaven, playing and running around with her two Grandpas-Vince and Bob.

So, on this one year date...
Momma and Daddy love you Ally! (Lilly too!)

Full Moon madness!

Hi All,
Well, the Full Moon certainly is hitting the P&P house this time around!
Let's see...
Last night our furnace went on the fritz and we knew it'd be a small fix (our system is less than 5 years old) but a PITA! Called Ayotte and the could come between 9-11...I was supposed to have water therapy today so called Mr. P&P and he had to come home to wait for them so I could go.
I got to therapy and they had messed up my appointment so...no therapy. Basically I drove there and back and Hubs came home for nothing! (Although he got a nice breakfast with Lilly!)
Ayotte got here just as I got home...thank God for Dave! Dave adjusted the system so it's working for now while they get 2 minute parts for the thing.
Then, I turned on the kitchen lights to check email and the bulb blew over the fridge.
One of my instructors has a sick child so we're covering tomorrow.
Thankfully, all LITTLE stuff...
But crazy and PITA nonetheless!
Hope YOU are all having a great Friday and we hope to see you ALL in class over the weekend!

Happy Birthday Lilly!

Hi Everyone,

Yes, that's right...today is Lilly's 1st birthday. Wow, it's been a year-hard to believe.

As some of you know, we lost our first baby, Ally, last November to cancer and, shortly thereafter, the first week of December, we brought Lilly home. She was a little, tiny puffball who helped us heal our hearts. We will never forget or stop loving Ally, but we have put all our love into Lilly and we are so thankful to have her in our lives.
Here she is as a 4 month old with her new bed!

Here she is today on her 1st birthday!

She's small for a Lab-only 61 lbs. versus her older sister's 97 (when she was healthy) and tiny compared to Ally. I wished for a 'puppy forever' and I have one. I know that Ally sent her to us and we are so blessed to have gotten her when we did.
If you are considering a dog, consider a Lab. They are THE BEST! We adopted Lilly from www.excaliburlabradors.com and they are a family breeder in Southern MA. This family LOVES dogs and breeds yellows, chocolates, blacks and Bernese Mountain Dogs.
And, if you already have a beloved cat or dog-consider getting health insurance for them. It's really affordable (about $20 per month) and covers all the 'bad' stuff (like cancer) so you can take care of your beloved family member should anything happen. Visit www.embraceyourpet.com and you'll see the policy we have for Lilly. We have the best pet healthcare (Tufts in Grafton MA) in the Country and you won't want to deny your furry family member in the event they get sick.
So, here's to Lilly on her special day-Momma and Daddy love you!

Monday Monday...

Hi Everyone!
Well, I hope you all had a good weekend and enjoyed the Pats win by a LANDSLIDE....Brady is back!
Oh and I hope you ignored the white, flaky stuff flying from the sky. I say we all imagined it...how does that sound? Good, right?
So, today I'm on my way to WF to pick up groceries and stop by the Doggie bakery to get Lilly's bday cake (her bday is tomorrow-1 year old already!)....(Doggie bakery closed on Mondays, I'll go back tomorrow.) and I see a woman driving a convertible...WITH THE TOP DOWN! She's wearing a parka a hat and sunglasses.
Ok, now I do understand that owning a convertible in New England has got to be maddening but, seriously? People it was snowing yesterday and it's NO TIME to have that top down on the car!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Don't miss class tonight-I know it's cold and dark out there but sitting in your Snuggie eating Doritos is NO WAY to spend the Fall! Get your a** to class and we'll make sure you're looking and feeling good all season long!

Thursday

Hi All,
First, we would like to THANK all of you for coming together and raising almost $3000 for the American Heart Association during this year's HeartWalk! WOW! You guys rock! If you'd still like to donate please visit our team page at www.merrimackvalleyheartwalk.org. Our team is in memory of K's Dad-Paul C and we deeply appreciate you honoring him with your generous contributions!

Second...
I'm sure I'm imagining that it's 40-something degrees outside and it's October 15. WHAT?! Lord people if this keeps up I am serious-we're all moving to SoCal together! And, as a sidenote, I know it's cold and dark out in the evening but don't let that come between you and coming to our AWESOME evening classes! We'll get your blood pumping and you'll actually feel more energized than when you came in! And, remember that regular exercise helps you fight off things like the flu and the common cold since it helps your immune system remain strong!

So today is paving day at the P&P ranch. We're getting new walkways, driveways and road. Our association sent out a spreadsheet which, of course, is not accurate. So, being the squeaky wheel that I am, I went right out and asked the Super of the job what was up. He is really nice and let us know we'll still be able to get out of our garages, etc. That's a relief.

Lilly is currently looking out the window at all the equipment that has taken up residence in front of our windows and she just finished giving me a 'shower' of kisses! (Another sidenote, we want to thank all of you who come in, see Lilly, and give her so much love. She clearly eats that up and we love that our baby gets so much wonderful attention from all of you awesome ladies! After losing Ally (almost a year ago now...hard to believe), we wanted Lilly with us as much as possible and having you all welcome her as the J mascot is so special. She loves playing in the big room before you all arrive and enjoys giving you all a little kiss before you start dancing! So...thank you so much!)

Well, it's time to get my fanny moving for the day-we hope to see you ALL in class so we can dance together, laugh together and ward off the winter blues that are coming WAY too early!

Make today count-be good to you!

15 years and the "heart' of the matter

HI All,
Happy Tuesday.
We would like to thank those of you who attended our 15th Annual Open House. (Pics up soon on the website) We had over 60 people, 4 newbies and lots of FUN!
15 years...it sounds so cliche' but it really went by so fast. 15 years ago we were nervous, having just returned from JazzerJam San Diego and hopefully fielding phone calls for our new classes. We started with 6 classes in a church, 3 taught by K and 3 taught by me and 2 class managers (one of them Karen's Mom). Our sign was a J sunshade made out of cardboard stapled to a sawhorse. Hey, at least we had a sign!
In the beginning I was convinced that if I went to the bathroom 5 minutes before class started more folks would come in. It happened all the time back in the 'day' and I still do it now...I know it's odd but I do! I remember the first time I had 10 people in class-double digits! Boy, was I happy! I try and remember those days now...it's important to remember where you came from!
Within a year we moved into the dance studio sublet, 11 classes a week, help from Liz and praying more folks would come. They did...we outgrew the room...K was pregnant with little K and we moved into our big, beautiful space-the one we have now.
10 years of teaching 7 days a week for me, 2 kids for K, certifying instructor after instructor....
And here we are-15 years later. 12 instructors (that includes K and me)...one more this year...they get married, we get older (and wiser hopefully) and more and more clients come through the door. We've got 5000 folks in our 'box' (we started with 12), many fab class managers, 2 terrific babysitters and countless classes under our belts.
I look at all that and I think...boy, the people that did all that must be tired-but we're not. When you do something for which you have passion, real passion, you're never tired. (Ok, well those days of teaching 3x per day...I was tired then!) How do I feel? Joyful. Happy. Thankful. Accomplished. Proud.
This weekend we'll warmup the crowd for the HeartWalk which really brings us to the 'heart' of the matter. Of all the things we do, classes we teach, instructors we mentor...we are doing it ALL for your health and to give you a longer life. Working out should work your body and touch your soul and that is what we try and do each day. And, when I get on that stage on Saturday (hopefully NOT in the rain) to warmup the crowd of 1000 people at the HeartWalk (www.merrimackvalleyheartwalk.org) I won't be nervous. I will look at them and realize that, every day, I get to positively affect the lives of the people in front of me. I am honored they let me into their lives and allow me to do what I love and help them all at the same time.
I will also remember 2 special people-my Dad, RSB Sr. and K's Dad, PJC, Sr. My dad passed almost 30 years ago of heart disease and K's dad passed away less than 3 weeks ago of a stroke. We couldn't save them but maybe, just maybe we can save you. Or, more pointedly, give you the opportunity to save yourself.
Heart disease is the #1 killer of women in America-don't let it take YOU away from those you love.
Know your cholesterol, your waist size (it should be 1/2 of your height in inches) and your blood pressure. Just go...get it checked. It doesn't hurt a bit.
Plus, don't you want to be dancing with us for the next 15 years??!!

Where did manners go?

HI All,
Today was a pretty tough day for many of us.
K's father passed away suddenly last week and today was his funeral.
First, I'd like to say that Mr. C was jovial, fun guy who was always smiling. I know he will be missed by many, many people-most of all his loving family. My heart breaks for my friend, who lost her Dad, her Mom, who lost her husband of 48 years and the grandchildren experiencing their first loss. I can relate. May he rest in peace.
Now...
I'd like an explanation of where manners have gone?
I certainly am no authority on manners and goodness but I think I have a good handle on how a person should react in certain situations.
For instance, if you come upon someone in trouble, you help if you can safely. If you see a piece of trash, pick it up. If someone you care about has a broken heart, try and help heal it. Even a kind word can mean so much.
And, if you are attending a serious occasion and you see someone you know, even someone who may not be your 'favorite person', who happens to be sitting alone-go up to them. Have some compassion for that human being because, if you can't, what kind of person are you? Offer to sit with them and offer them your human support...it doesn't mean you're now their BFF, it just means you acknowledge them as a HUMAN and you're sharing in the heaviness of the occasion.
There are many people I've met in my life who are not my favorite people or whom I feel have wronged me. But there would NEVER be a time when I would ignore their humanness. I couldn't live with myself if I did that.
I can think of a couple people that I might SAY I would pass if I saw them on the street injured but, in reality, I could never do it. I would stop and help if I could. It would be hard, but my human spirit would know it was the right thing and compel me to do it.
Apparently there are many people who have no spirit or are heartless.
I pity them.
They are missing out on REAL relationships with people and giving of themselves in a REAL way.
Sad.
Don't you think?

May we never forget the sacrifice of so many to keep us free.

I hate to say I told you so...

But, people, the Government has come out with a warning on Alli (that weightloss pill) and, it seems, it may be causing liver damage. (I say 'may' because they are still working on correlating it but there seems to be a pattern of people taking it and suffering liver damage. To be fair, the warning right now is for folks to continue to take it 'as directed'.)

Now look, I know we all want the 'quick fix'...we're used to drive thrus for coffee and food, ATMs for money and all that but you CANNOT quickly fix your fitness and weight. Could you get surgery? Yes, but that has it's own dangers. Can you starve yourself? Yes, but that will cause additional health problems. Can you take a pill? Yes, but as you can see (and over the years this has been proven out about other weightloss medications) it can seem ok for awhile when it's really causing damage to your body in the long term.

Please, for the love of God, stop doing this to yourselves and eat less and exercise. It sounds so simple but we all know it's not.

Come to class 3-5x per week, commit to YOU, eat well 5 days out of 7, get your family involved and you will be fit and healthy. It will take awhile (it took me about 1 year to get where I am now and I have maintained it for almost 20 years) but it will be a life change that works for your whole life!

See you in class!

Happy Friday!

Say What?!

Hi All and Happy Friday! TGIF! (subtext...I hope the GD Full Moon is OVER!)
Ok...
Now listen, I am ALL for education toys, fun toys and the like. I pride myself on being open minded because, hey, we're all on this planet to be happy, prosperous and enjoy life. So, you do your thing and I'll do mine and we'll all be happy! (I hope!)
Anyway, this week I heard about something which has closed my mind like a steel trap (no worries...just on this issue!)....and what might that be you say? That would be the breast feeding baby doll.
Yes, you read that correctly.
The doll comes with a little halter top with, uh, ahem, little flowers in a certain position that the little girl puts on. When the doll is held near the flowers it makes suckling noises and stops when it's full and time to be burped.
People...this must end. This doll is currently *not* available in the US so we're good so far but, seriously, do we need this doll? Should a little girl be playing this level of pretend? I, for one, think not.
I will say (as you all know) that I do not have kids but I do have 2 Godchildren, one of whom is a girl. I would be MORTIFIED if K bought little K (who is now too old for dollies anyway) this doll. NO I say, a thousand times NO. Am I being a prude? What do you think? Would you buy your child/grandchild/niece/godchild this doll?
Uh, would you?

Qtips in Smart cars??

Hi and Happy Thursday to all!
So, today I was on my way to WF in Bedford and was enjoying having all the windows and sunroof in the MDX open and feeling the nice NON-humid air, when I spied a couple of troubling things...
First, a police car (with lights and sirens) was coming out of a side street so I stopped to let him out when a Qtip (aka a little, tiny oldster driving a car) almost rear ended me, then honked because, apparently, SHE COULDN'T SEE THE GD POLICE CAR I WAS STOPPING FOR. (Yes, I'm yelling there.)
Then, as I safely (thank God) made my way further towards WF, I spied a Smart Car (you know, those TEENY TINY cars that, seriously, could fit in the back of my SUV) with a Qtip driving it.
Now, people...that is just ASKING for trouble! The good part? If that Qtip in the Smart Car hits you, you'll probably be ok, since it's a glorified bicycle.

I'm sure you're wondering but, yes, I got home safely, not hit by any Qtips today...so far.
See you in class!

Skunk update and...

Hi All and Happy Wednesday!
The skunk smell was successfully eradicated by the afternoon class yesterday! My extensive measures to rid us of his odor worked and by the time the afternoon folks arrived, no one could smell it. Thank God!

Today's news holds a story about a shooting in a health club in PA. Our hearts, of course, go out to all the victims, their families and friends.
And, it just highlights the fact that life is very short. Many times we all get caught up with our lives...small things (like crazy Full Moon stuff) seems to take over and we focus on that, versus the larger picture.
News stories like this always make me think and re-evaluate. Yes, yesterday was crazy with Full Moon nuttiness....light bulbs burning out suddenly, tripping, forgetting things...but overall, a good day. Things work out and the bigger things in life are good (thank God, knock on wood...etc).
So, today after class, hug your family, be thankful for all you have and try not let the nuttiness of life take over!
Have a great day!

Do you believe...

In the pull of the Full Moon?
Weird question, huh?
Happy Tuesday to all...another beauty of a day and I was lucky to get about 1 hour at the pool today before getting down to biz here at the Center.

Full moon....beautiful and annoying.
In the last couple of days I knew it was coming. Why? Read on...
-One of our speakers starting 'popping' and usually this means it's something touching the wiring. I think I handled it with my low tech solution in the ceiling. It's really nothing, just annoying.
-Tried taking my shoes off after class last night and got one of them in such a knot I had to ask for helps from my clients. (Thanks Gwenn and Sandy) What adult cannot take their shoes off without getting them hopelessly tied in knots? Apparently me.
-Sometime last night a skunk decided he would leave his scent outside our Center. (OUTSIDE people...for those of you who were asking if we had a skunk IN the Center...Yeah, it's a pet. Seriously people get a grip.) Periodically wildlife will venture into our mall parking lot and we cannot control it. So, I've got fans going, the front door cracked open and candles going and lysol sprayed everywhere. So...deal. It'll be gone within a day.
-All of the above in addition to various trippings, dropping things and other assorted ridiculousness just heralds the arrival of the Full Moon.
So...be careful out there!

Improvising...

Happy Monday all!

Well, we have another beautiful (not that we've had that many but this is a good one...) day and things are busy, busy, busy at P&P...

We've got vacations to cover, monitorings to do and some summer fun to continue to have!

K and the kids are at the beach with their cousins and I'm here hanging with Lilly!

Yesterday, Mr. P&P announced we were going for ice cream mid-afternoon and who was I to argue?!

So, we packed Lilly in the car (she doesn't mind the car and does well, but Ally LOVED car rides...Lilly, we think, tolerates them to get, well, ice cream or to the beach) and off we went to Kimball's II

Now, that is a pic of Kimball's I (aka the Main Kimball's) but we do not go there due to the length of the lines (it can be an HOUR in line in the summer) even though it's mere seconds from our house. (Mr. P&P doesn't do 'waiting'...)
Anyway, we go to Kimball's II and I will not tell you where it is under pain of death. Why?! I don't want THOSE lines to get big...sorry! ;)
We arrive at Kimball's II and Mr. P&P settles on a chocolate chip cookie dough frappe and I, of course, decide to get a pint of chocolate peanut butter for the week. Lilly will get a 'dog sized' scoop (they actually have special paper dishes for the puppies) of vanilla.
I approach the window (NO line!!) and order. The nice boy behind the window tells me they are out of chocolate peanut butter (horrors!)...I say, "OK, how about chocolate chip peanut butter" (a variation on my fave). The nice boy says, "We're out of that too" WTF?
Ok, regroup here...stay calm...
I say, "Ok, I'll have a pint of chocolate and a container of the peanut butter topping".
As we drove home, I told Mr. P&P about the horror of them being out of my 2 faves and what I did to improvise...he said, "Good thinking dear!"
I thought so too!
And you know what?
It's GREAT that way! Chocolate ice cream with the peanut butter topping...GENIUS!
I think I'll have another bowl tonight after supper! (Oh and after kicking your tushes in Circuit!)

Things I'm loving right now!

Hi All,
I've read a few of my favorite bloggers recently and many have done 'things I love' posts so, basically, I thought I would too!
So here goes:
-Smartbargains.com. I found this site and have bought holiday and birthday gifts here, as well as some things for myself! Their prices are GREAT (better than many sites I've seen) and they ship fast and returns are easy.
-Joico keratin deep penetrating treatment (for hair). For those who do NOT want to have their hair chemically straightened, this home treatment ROCKS. I add it to my 'hair' routine every other week in the summer and it keeps frizzies at bay. You can purchase it online (just google it) or at the Hair Cosmo place in the Pheasant Lane mall in NH. It's almost $20 but WELL worth it!
-J. Crew french terry skirts. I wear these quite a bit in the summer (when I'm not wearing khaki capris or walking shorts) and they wear easy, go with everything and kind of dress up your summer look for relatively cheap. Get thee online and try and get them on sale! (or try the outlet in Wrentham)
-Whole Foods. As you all know, I've shopped at WF foreva (that's the NE way to say it) and if you've not checked it out...go...now. NO, it is NOT more expensive (unless you go nuts in the gourmet food area) and for local veg, fruit and meat it rocks. (PS For the summer, I go to local Farmer's Markets too/instead depending upon what they have for sale.) Favorite products? 360 Organic (their store brand) cupcake mix and the Dr. Oteker's frosting mix. L O V E. And, are you ready? Organic, baked cheese puffs! Seriously! All natural and I can actually have cheese puffs now and again! AWESOME!
-BJ's wholesale club (and not for the reason you think). No, we're not buying 30lbs. of cheese at Villa P&P...we're buying (in addition to the paper products for the Center) a flat screen TV. Ah you might say...just buying a flat screen to have one? Uh, no. The TV we watch most is in our front room (our 'hang out with Lilly' room) and the TV in there was teeny weeny...13" traditional set. So, when the TV at the Center started going on the blink, we decided to buy ourselves (for our bdays, which are 12 days apart) a new TV. (Oh and for anyone trying to find out my address to try and steal it? We have an alarm system AND neighbors who are home ALL day so don't even think about it. Oh and my Uncle is a cop. So there.)
Anyway, BJ's has AWESOME prices on TVs so if you're in the market to replace your set, check them out. And, if you're not a member you can get a day pass!
So, there you have it. Have a favorite yourself? Click on 'comments' below and leave a comment to share with us all!
Oh and don't forget to come to class TONIGHT...the ice cream truck will be here right after class!
See you then!

So many thanks and...cankles?

HI Everyone!
First, I'd like to thank all of you for the birthday wishes, wonderful gifts, and thoughtfulness. I am truly a lucky person and I thank you ALL for your kindness! Mr. P&P and I have birthdays weeks apart so it was a treat to get a beautiful flower arrangement (pics to follow) from him at work and cards and treats from Lilly. (Oh and we finally purchased an HD flat screen and we love it...and BJ's wholesale club for their GREAT prices!)
My favorite kids (Little K and Little Mista) bought me a beautiful gift and I got a visit too!
I'm gathering up all my Nordie's gift cards for a little shopping spree soon!

Second...
Cankles?!
I was just watching the Today show (which I have loved since I was a kid and still watch every morning) and G*ld's Gym has declared July 'cankle month'. WTF?
Listen...they had a DOCTOR ON who said you can get the fat sucked out of your 'cankles' for $12k! WHAT? The 'fitness expert' (and I use the term loosely) says if you jump rope, you'll reduce your 'cankles'. WHAT again? And, the fashion expert says you should trash your capris and short summer dresses for long pants and maxi dresses...to COVER your 'cankles'. Once again I say WHAT???????????????
People...there are SO many other things in this life more important than the shape of your ankles. If your calf is a part of your ankle (with no thinning around the ankle) making it a 'cankle' WHO CARES?????????????????????????????
Why oh why does the media have to 'make up' things for us to stress about? Lord. Seriously.
So, men and ladies who feel you have 'cankles'...show them proudly? I swear I've NEVER even noticed this and supposedly it's a serious 'issue'...
You know what a serious issue is?
-Elderly drivers killing people
-Healthcare
-The economy
-The fact that is 90% humidity out there (and, no, not because of my HAIR, because folks with breathing problems should not be out in this stuff)
-Fighting Cancer, heart disease and all other major diseases (unfortunately too numerous to name here) and raising money for research
I could go on and on...
We, at the big J, will NOT be focusing on 'cankles' this month. We'll be focusing on dancing (cardio), strength training and stretching and feeling GOOD in our bodies...all the while still enjoying our ice cream, capri pants and maxi dresses!
So, here's to REAL PEOPLE who have more important things to worry about than CANKLES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

14 years...

ago today I was wondering what would happen now that I was a certified J instructor. I had made it through my 11am practical exam, written exam, and the excuriating wait (from 11am to about 6pm) to find out results.
Basically they let us walk into the room where we did our audition and pick up the paper with our name on it. It either said "pass" or "fail" on it. Mine said "pass". I still have that piece of paper...it was one of my proudest days.
This 14 years has gone by in a flash...
-Teaching my very first class in Windham, subbing for someone out sick and wondering what I was doing on the stage. Am I really the instructor? Calling K after (she was teaching in Amherst that night) and crying...so happy I did it, they seemed to have fun in my class and thanking God that first class was over.
-For the next 10 years I taught practically every single day, sometimes more than once and had so much fun.
-First classes in the Church, then in the dance studio...Kayla's arrival, our move to the Center, Kyle's arrival, certifying people at least 2x a year to help us (and others in the District), toilet troubles, broken ankles, sick kids, new customers, old customers coming back...records, cassettes, cd's...ipod! Leotards, thong leotards, bike shorts, jazz pants! Head band mics to cordless mics. K married with no kids then 2 kids, me being single then getting married again...instructors getting certified, getting married, having their own kids.
-I think back to 1981, the year I started taking class in High School. I think of how much I loved it and couldn't wait to go to class each day.
-Now, I hope that, 28 years later, I teach classes that people look forward to attending.
14 years ago it was my dream to be a J instructor and open a Center that K and I could run together.
We did it. Sometimes I still can't believe it.
And, even on those days when the toilets aren't working, an instructor's out sick and I want to tear my hair out...I always take a moment to remember that 3o year old girl who dreamt of being an instructor and how thankful SHE would be to be me....oh yeah, she is me!
So to everyone who has contributed to my incredible journey...thank you. Thank you for attending class, thank you for referring your friends, agreeing to work at our desk, thank you for teaching with us and being so awesome, thanks for sending us those rare but oh so appreciated positive emails....thanks for....
Just letting us live our dreams.
A dream is a wish your heart makes....right?
I made many wishes in my heart throughout my life, but this is one I achieved that surpassed even what I wished for.
Here's to at least another 14!

Sunshine day

HI All,
Remember that song? Was it the Partridge Family? I can't remember but I'll look it up later!
Anyway...
3 days of sun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What are you doing to enjoy?
At the P&P household we went to a wonderful party Friday evening, great friends and lots of laughs...Saturday we went out to the Border Cafe in Burlington for Mr. P&P's continuing 50th day celebration (it was YUMMY). If you've not tried the Border Cafe (and you like mexican food) please do! They even have outdoor seating now with NO SMOKING (woohoo) allowed.
Sunday we had my MIL over for a bbq and enjoyed the weather...just like Santa Barbara! AHHH, home.
So, chime in on how you're enjoying this weather even if you're working, ok?
See you in class!

Today

Hi All,
It's Tuesday and, well, it's raining again. Nuff said.
As all of the world knows, today is Michael Jackson's memorial service. It is to be televised on all networks live and I know streamed live on the web as well. Whatever you think of MJ, there was certainly a huge, God given talent there and some demons as well. We are not the ones to judge the latter and on his funeral day I say, "Rest in peace".
But, it also brings up a point that applies to us all. What can that be, you ask?
Watch the tributes from all over the world of people dancing and singing to his music, signing the three huge condolence cards out front of the Staples Center in LA, and all the downloads from itunes of his collection. One of his close friends stated, "He would have loved this and finally really known how much his fans loved him."
Think about that. Do *you* really know how much you mean to your friends and family (aka your 'fans')? Do you tell your friends and family how much they mean to YOU??! Isn't it sad that only in death does Michael Jackson finally realize how loved he was by his fans? I think it's deeply sad.
One of my favorite Michael Jackson songs in "Man in the Mirror"-it's about something I believe in-personal responsibility. "I'm looking at the Man in the Mirror, I'm asking him to change his ways and no message could've been any clearer-if you want to make the world a better place, take a look at yourself and make a change."
We all want to be loved and cared for by those in our lives but we have to make that effort too. How many times have we gotten upset with a friend or family member and thought, "Well, they can call ME, I'm not calling them!" Silly. I've done it and it's STUPID. It wastes the precious time we have in life. LIFE IS SHORT. Really short.
So I ask you today to tell those people in your life (or show them in a little way) how much they mean to you. Your husband forgets to take out the trash? So what. Take it out yourself or leave it for later that day. Your kids are trashing the family room? So what. You get to hear their laughter, see them play and know they are healthy and happy. Is anything really broken or ruined? Probably not...so let it go. Hug them, laugh, join in and then you can ALL clean it up!
When was the last time you said, "Please or thank you" to your husband/wife/s.o.? Have you just been yelling at the kids and not telling them how special they are?
Do you ever take a moment to bask in the warmth of the family and friends that love YOU? I know I don't. People thinks it means you're selfish or self centered but, really, you SHOULD bask in that glow. You should take time to realize how many people truly love and care about you. Do it when you're HERE for God's sake.
You will NOT get to the last moments of your life and say, "Thank God I yelled at Johnny for leaving his clothes on the floor, that'll teach him." No. You'll say, "OMG how could the last thing I said to my child be in anger? Why didn't I just take a breathe and calm down? Why didn't I tell him more how, though he is disorganized, I love his creativity and his spark for life?"
Michael Jackson had all the money and fame in the world. He lived in lavish homes, drove fancy cars and had legions of people taking care of him (though that CARE is debatable at this point). He died...at 50 years old. He will not see his children grow up, he won't take care of his Mother in her elder years. He won't play music with his brothers ever again. His life, though blessed in many ways, was VERY short.
So, start today. Appreciate those around you and REALIZE they appreciate you. Don't wait, time is of the essence.
Go walk in the rain and splash in a puddle with your kids. Give your husband/wife a hug and tell them you love them.
Then when you look at the 'Man in the Mirror' you can smile at yourself and say, "Everyone's right, I DO ROCK!"

J getaway in Palm Springs!

HI All,
Whew....our "J" Spa getaway/convention in Palm Springs is over!
Teaching last night was fun and full of 'tough love' for sure! I think JF and KT wore you all out over the weekend (in a good way)!!! Thanks to both wonderful ladies for covering my classes!
Our trip started at the CRACK of dawn on Thursday...car was on time to pick us up and we got to the airport in plenty of time. Since we were not checking bags (and I totally recommend that-NOT checking bags) it was a breeze (plus we printed our boarding passes online the night before).
Thankfully all flights were on time...the only wrinkle? The flight on a propellor plane from
Phoenix to Palm Springs. Lots of turbulence + 110 heat + NO A/C on the plane = upset tummy! (I will not elaborate but it was NOT pretty!) This is the pic of the, ahem, offending plane with NO A/C!
The resort (La Quinta Resort and Spa) was FAB! Each section of 4 buildings was built around a pool and jacuzzi so you didn't have to go to the 'main' pool! It was great!

Here's a pic of bougenvilla, my FAVORITE flower! (They also grow all over SB, my hometown!) In the middle is a pic of the architecture of the resort! On the right is a pic of the mountains surrounding our resort...beautiful!
The food? AWESOME! Guacamole made at the table, yummy seafood and wonderful outside dining! (They have sprayers to spritz you while you dine...can you say 115 degrees??!!)
The "J" part of the weekend?
Also TERRIFIC! Judi, Shanna and the taping team were so wonderful as usual and the taping went off professionally and the upcoming new routines ROCK! Judi even specially (and last minute) choreo'd a routine to a Michael Jackson song the evening he passed as a tribute. SHE ROCKS!
Pics are (on left is a group shot of the taping, middle is the taping team on stage and the right is two tired friends during the taping)
Dawn and I met up with 3 friends from our online business group and it was wonderful to see them, in person, and hang out. Plus, since the carpet in our room was damp and we called the office (simply to let them know-really NOT to complain because it was no big deal), we got a HUGE meal credit so we ate free!

This pic? Just a funny one we saw driving around. I just got a kick out of it every time we passed it!
The flights home were uneventful (thank God) and we got home on time and happy to have had a GREAT time with GREAT friends and our FAB program! Seeing Judi and the crew is always so inspiring and uplifting.
Oh and we DID try and bring your warm weather back, but that piece of luggage got lost! TEEHEE
See you in class!
PS Remember to check our July 4th weekend schedule...

1 year ago today...

I got up as usual and hung out with Ally. She had been having some weezing and wasn't eating well but we'd taken her in and everything seemed ok. They told us to keep an eye on her...
I went upstairs to get dressed for the day and when I came down she was laying on the living room sofa (she rarely did that) and looked...not good.
I immediately called Dr. D and drove there to bring her in. Within 30 minutes our lives were changed forever.
I remember she collapsed in the exam room and Dr. J had to carry her to the table for oxygen. The ultrasound showed a mass. I watched them highlight it and I just knew it was bad. I called Mr. P&P at work and told him to come meet me. I was a horrible, crying mess. I called K to cover my class (I ultimately did teach) and within 1 hour (on a pouring rainy day like this one) we were winging our way to Tufts. Mr. P&P was in the back seat with Ally and I was driving and trying NOT to think.
They saved her that night and we got to bring our baby home within a few days. It was the longest week of our lives. We visited 2x per day (me in the AM and Mr. in the PM). She was an angel for them and so good with all the procedures. All we wanted was to have her home though we knew her diagnosis was grave.
We got 6 months and we are so greatful to have had it. She is still a huge part of our family and always will be.
Truth be told...we have a photo of Ally next to a photo of our new baby, Lilly, on a table in our living room. Lilly has ALWAYS (without coaching by the way) hit Ally's collar (we have that hanging on the frame) with her nose. Every day she wants to get out in that room and say HI to her Sissy. We did that today together and I'm sure she and her Dad will tonight.
Lilly is a little bit of Ally with a dash of sass. We are so lucky.
So, today we think of Ally...and remember that special 6 months...we love you Ally!
XOXO
Mom and Dad

Seriously...

Hi All,
It's Thursday and the weather folks are telling us it's going to be rainy/cloudy/pouring/drizzling through next Tuesday. Oh good...not!
Anyway...
You guys are all doing GREAT keeping up with your classes-don't forget you get to 60 classes with your teammate and you get that fabulous tote FREE! (While supplies last) Have fun with it...

Now, I think everyone knows that I LOVE animals. Mr. P&P and I are the proud parents of a 7 month old baby yellow Lab and to say we miss our 8 year old Lab, Ally, after she passed from cancer is a severe understatement. We treated Ally for months with the newest and best medications at the BEST place...TUFTS and we would do it again in a heartbeat. We also supported Paws 4 a Cure-the walk to fight canine cancer. Lilly has health insurance, every toy known to man, lives in her own room and is fed only organic food and treats. Her pediatrician is THE BEST vet in our State and we love her to BITS!!! Just the other day, I saved a baby bird (their nest is in a shrub near our front door) from a crow by standing over it in my yard for almost 30 minutes until the Mommie Bird came back. I love all animals (well, except snakes maybe) and believe they should be protected and never abused.
However...
PETA came out today admonishing President Obama for killing a FLY during a recent interview. The fly was annoyingly buzzing around the President during his interview and he waited until it landed on his hand and he whacked it. The decedent then fell to the floor where the President picked it up, with a tissue, after the interview. PETA says it's going to send the President a device that will allow him to catch insects and then safely release them outside.
Uh...
Seriously?
PETA, here's a newflash...this totally ruins your street cred. As an organization you do a great deal to help animals but stuff like this? Time to rethink. And, while we're at it, I do not agree with anyone throwing fake blood on anyone else. If someone chooses to wear fur, EDUCATE them, do not throw things at them. There again-street cred=0. Please stick to educating the public through your organization and maybe start in the schools with information on how to save animals, treat them well and take care of them. And, I have to be honest, the next time a GD fly is buzzing around ME, I will whack it just like the President and I will not feel bad.

Attack of the Q-tips!

Happy Wednesday everyone!
First, I plan to try and blog from the Palm Springs "J" convention next weekend (June 25-27) and I promise to try and get pics of Judi, Shanna and the gang. I will miss you all but know you will be in good hands with Jill and Kristen!
Second, RHONJ. If you do not know this acronym please comment and I will fill you in. Needless to say the finale of this show was crazy and I cannot wait for the reunion show tomorrow night!
What does "Attack of the Q-tips" mean?
I'm sure we've all heard in the news that elderly drivers (some call them Q-tips since you can only see the white tuft of hair above the steering wheel) have been wrecking havoc on the roads lately. Sadly, a little girl was killed earlier this week and countless businesses and people have been damaged and injured by these drivers.
Let me first say that I do understand these folks want their independence. Let me also say that my MIL has been in NO SHAPE to drive for years and we just got her to stop driving (and took the car) this year. For the last year she has barely driven, but that makes no difference. She should NOT have been on the road. I know it's tough for families to handle this but you just have to DO IT to save your family member and others.
And, let me say that if you pass a driving test, you are entitled to drive...at any age. (Well, at least starting at the age when you are able to start driving...)
Today I saw/drove near/behind 4 Q-tips that should clearly not have been driving. How do I know?
1. Q-tip pulled out of the doctor offices near St. Mary's (I had to SLAM on my brakes) and then literally proceeded to CREEP down the street, so slowly I had to honk as the cars behind ME were honking! Q-tip paid no mind and turned LEFT onto Chelmsford St....continuing to CREEP while futzing around with his GPS. He literally almost hit a car IN the parking lot of the hair salon and I, thankfully, turned into the PO so I didn't have to continue to follow him. However, when I pulled out of the PO and back onto Chelmsford St. the same Q-tip was coming TOWARDS me, having turned around in DD and was still futzing with the GPS. GAH.
2. Next Q-tip pulled out of the business parking lot I was in and ran over the entire curb. He could barely see over the steering wheel.
3. Sitting at my desk at the Center when Q-tip (last night) banged a U-turn and almost hit the white Lexus parked at the fence.
4. Today? Q-tip and wife pulling up at about 40 mph to park in the handicapped spot (which really is NO LONGER the handicapped spot) in front of the Travel Agency. I thought, "This is it...they're going to hit the building." Thankfully, they stopped, building intact and went to have their Chinese food. Sidebar-Q-tip can barely walk TO the restaurant but I'm sure he's fine driving...SIGH.
And you just thought a Q-tip would just hurt your eardrum if you stick it IN your ear! No, in fact, a Q-tip can KILL you if they shouldn't be behind the wheel!

My ear is numb!

HI All,
Well, I'm sure that makes you wonder what the heck I'm talking about!
I was on the phone over 1 hour today with my insurance/the lab company and back again!
Now, though these types of days aggravate the crap out of me-I am still a HUGE believer in doing your regular checkups and physicals (although your BP might be up like mine when dealing with the BILLING!).
First I'll say I'm very lucky because my husband and I have very good insurance and I know that makes us very fortunate.
Second I'll say that our insurance company folks are VERY nice and helpful!
Now, I'll say that a certain lab company in this area s*cks big time!
Every January I have to call my insurance company and let them know that I DO NOT HAVE other insurance. I always forget and my husband usually accidentally throws out the form they send to confirm that.
So, when I had my physical in January all the billing for labs and my mammo (screening) got all messed up. I waded through that in March and called this particular lab company (Q*est) and said, "Hey, my insurance company is resubmitting so it'll be paid, please do NOT send it into collections."(My insurance told me NOT to pay it, they'd process it and Q*est should rebill me.)
Q*est agreed and we moved on...
Until today.
I got my 'explanation of benefits' and a radiology bill (cool) and an invoice FROM A COLLECTION agent....horrors!
I immediately called my insurance who immediately called the offending collection's people. They truly did not give a rat's a**. (I was on the line too.) They said it was my problem. I begged to differ and magically when I mentioned the STATE AG's office, they all of a sudden noticed my bill had been updated as paid...TODAY! Really? Miracle!
But, I still had to call the offending Q*est.
Oh and they take LUNCH from 12-1pm...no phone calls.
Really?
How nice.
So, at 1:01pm I called them.
"Oh, Stacy didn't note on your account what was happening when you called months ago so that's why it went to collections."
WELL TAKE IT OFF.
"Oh you don't need to worry about it."
I BEG TO DIFFER and maybe the AG's office would like an earful of this!
"Oh, we'll immediately send you a letter stating it's NOT on your credit and it has been fully resolved."
I BET YOU WILL.
So, my ear may be numb but my squeaky wheel still gets the grease!

The Dancer

HI All,
We have that new song "Human" on our current set and everyone is loving the lyrics, "Are we human or are we dancers?"
Well, both of course!
I referenced the poem, written by someone I certified with in 1995 a couple of times and I wanted to reprint it here.
The poem was written by James Webb Jones and copyrighted in 1995.

The Dancer
She works intently in an office by day
She drinks coffee with low fat creamer and
She smiles often as she pushes through this routine.
The sooner the workday is over
The sooner she is free for dance class.
She should have been a dancer,
She would have been a great one.
She's not an office worker heart and soul.
She warms up and
As the intensity heightens
You can see the music grip her and caress her spirit.
She takes flight and gravity works only as she wills it.
She merges with the music.
She does not pinch a note.
She pulls the music's power to her.
As she lifts her body she lifts even the saddest spirit.
With such graceful power she proves the purity of the dance's flow.
Heart and soul she is and ever will be a dancer.

Jimmy wrote this poem for us when we all got certified. He was the only guy, with over 30 girls. Hardly any of us (if any at all) had come from a 'dance' background but J always made us FEEL like dancers and becoming certified instructors certainly solidified that for all of us.
I have cherished this poem in my old workshop binder all this time and since I had mentioned it in class, I thought I'd share it with you all.
Oh, and EACH of you is a dancer...heart and soul!
See you in class!

Rain Rain go away...

Come again another day!
Now, I'm all for the rain to encourage all our veggies and flowers but, seriously....less than 50 degrees out?!! GAH!

Did you ever notice on Full Moon day (today BTW) that WEIRD little things just happen?
I think I dropped practically everything today at least once as I got out the door this morning including my umbrella!
And, I ran into a REALLY WEIRD guy going into DD. He was coming out with his coffee so I stepped back to let him exit and thanked him for holding the door for me. He just STARED at me as if I'd slapped him in the face. Did he not hear me thank him? Did he not see me smile at him? He was a rotund gentleman wearing a neon orange rainslicker, had crazy "Einstein" white hair and specs and I was kind of weirded out since he was still sitting in his car when I exited with my coffee 5 minutes later.
And, I saw a couple 'suits' with boxes of Godiva chocolates loitering around the mall today...never seen chocolate as a way to get 'in' someplace to solicit. (I, of course, was consistent and did NOT let them in!)
Tonight, thankfully, is potluck night! (Plan to come down!)
Let's hope the rain clears up for the Paws 4 a Cure walk against canine cancer on Sunday!

Stop and smell the roses...or

Check out a beautiful, delicate blue bird's egg that will soon be a baby bird!

(This shot taken right outside my front door in our hedge...)

Memorial Day

Hi All,
Well, this weekend marks the 'unofficial' beginning of Summer and our pool is open and we will be diving in for sure! The weather reminds me of my hometown (SB, CA) and we are all prepped for cookouts and relaxation...
We have a full schedule today (Friday) through Sunday and, remember 1 class only on Monday (check our website for more info).
More importantly, Memorial Day is the day we remember and honor those who have given their lives for our freedom.
We have many military families in our J family, with many still in harm's way. We want you all to know you have our support...always.
My Dad was in the Navy and his grave will bear the tiny flag, placed there in his honor for this solemn day.
Here are some Memorial Day facts you may not know:
-The 1st Memorial Day was May 30, 1868
-Flowers and/or flags are placed on graves of fallen service members all over our country
-Flags should be at half staff until noon on Memorial Day, then raised to the top
-Red poppies are the flower that signifies Memorial Day
-NY was the 1st State to recognize Memorial Day
-Memorial Day became a Federal holiday in 1971
So, whatever your plans on Monday, take a moment and remember why we have this holiday-it's not just a day off or a day to go to the beach...it's a day to remember that freedom is not free.

In an instant...

HI Everyone,
Today will be another beautiful day and I'm sure we're all looking forward to enjoying it. As usual in New England, that can always change 'in an instant'.
Why the title of this post? Is it really about the weather? No.
In the past few weeks we've had 1 client diagnosed with cancer, one associate instructor in a pretty awful car accident and one class manager who has to have her foot almost completely rebuilt due to what she thought was only a slight injury. Thankfully, they are all on the mend and will be ok, albeit with some long recovery times.
And, all of them (or their friends or family) have said, "Wow, it's amazing how your life can change in an instant."
Just like the rain can blow in and 'ruin' a beautiful, sunny day-injury or illness can blow into your life or the life of someone you love. We know that from Ally's cancer last year and we have learned (the hard way) to appreciate every, single day and moment.
So, for today, stop and LOOK at the color of that sky-it's an amazing blue.
Stop and look at your children-they are running crazy, being silly, making you nuts-but they are learning about their life, their bodies and the world around them. That's amazing, so see it through their eyes.
Stop and really TASTE your lunch today instead of eating at your desk and rushing through. And take that lunch OUTSIDE today and enjoy the aforementioned sky!
Stop and look around at all the things you DO have, instead of kvetching about what you do not have.
When you stop and really 'BE' in the moment, you'll find all sorts of things to enjoy. It'll bring you peace and joy.
So, what will YOU enjoy today? Share it here...oh, and come to class and we'll enjoy some 'sweating' time together!

And the Biggest Loser is....

Helen! (Aged 48)
48 people, that's NOT 28 or 38. The 'at home' winner is Jerry, aged 64. He was the most sick person on the show this season, made it only 2 weeks on the Ranch and lost almost 50% of his body weight!

Now, for all those of you who are planning on STOPPING your exercise this summer because your kids are home...
Check out Aubrey, mother of 5, who was also on BL this year. She made excuses on her 'review' video at the finale and only lost 43lbs. in the 5 months since the show ended! GAH. (Sorry, but with all the info and perks she got, it should have been more...)
Then, check out her sister who last 92lbs. in the same amount of time, 2 (or 3, can't remember) kids and a full time job to boot!

The point is...ANYONE can become more fit and healthy IF they apply themselves, make it a priority and.....(drumroll please..............................................................................................................................................................

TRY.
Yes, try.
You have to ACTUALLY TRY TO BECOME MORE FIT.
You have to TRY working hard in class.
You have to TRY to eat well 5 days out of 7.
And if at first you do not succeed....................TRY AGAIN.
Remember that when you make excuses, the real person you hurt is YOURSELF. It might sound harsh, but it's true.
If you do not make your own health and fitness a priority NO ONE ELSE WILL. We cannot do it for you...we can only put on the music, add in the motivation, model the intensity and give you a push.
All you have to do is try every day. Take our hands...we'll help you.
But, as a wise man once said...
He helps those who help themselves.
Now...pack your clothes, mark your calendar and GET TO CLASS-you know you'll feel better once you do!
And, HUGE PROPS to Helen, BL winner this season. YOU GO GIRL!

Sum, Sum Summertime...

Hi All,
We hope you had a wonderful Mother's Day weekend...the weather cooperated (for the most part) and hopefully we were all able to enjoy!
As we come into better and better weather each week, here are a few tips for getting into class as the weather pulls you away:
-Look at our ENTIRE schedule and adjust, so you can have more time outside and with family. Remember, we have 30 classes a week and while you may normally attend at, say, 9:30am or 6 or 6:30pm, check out our early AM (6am-Tu,Th,F) classes or our 7:30pm (Tu,Th) classes. If you get your workout in EARLY in the day you'll never miss it. And, if you do, later in the evening is perfect. Get the kids ready to 'power down' for the night and hop out to class!
-You have a family schedule for the kids, make sure YOU are on there too! As the kids come to the end of the school year, make sure you write in YOUR workouts, along with all their playdates, soccer games and camp dates. (***Oh and don't forget about our Jr. Jazz Kamp signups! Kamp is in mid-August and is filling up fast. If you have kids aged 4-8 they'll learn about fitness, play fun games and have a healthy snack while YOU get something done for yourself!)
-Yes, being outside makes you FEEL healthier and more fit but you STILL need your workouts with us! Don't give up on looking and feeling good in that swimsuit now that better weather is here-get into class! Consider emailing us to set up a Personal Touch session like "Bikini Bootcamp". We can work you out privately, targeting abs, legs and arms 2x per week at a time YOU choose and our prices are VERY reasonable-you'd be surprised! Email us or comment here today and set that up!
-Our Summer 'on the go' attendance game keeps you 'on point' all summer long! Check our bulletin board for pics of that CUTE summer tote...team up with a bud and play to WIN! (Plus, it'll make sure you're in class at least 3x per week!)

These tips should help and, if you have a great tip OR a great summer-time recipe, share it in our comments and we'll post it for all to see!
See you all in class!

How do you feel when you see...

-Kids on skateboards using parking lots and/or sidewalks?
-A woman with full sleeves of tattoos on both arms?
-A plumber (or electrician or construction worker or any other person whom you hired) who comes into your house with a cig in their mouth and full sleeves to tattoos?
-Someone who walks with a limp or seems to have a disability?

Do you judge in these situations? I think many of us do and I know for sure we should NOT.
Take for instance the lady who has had the only full facial transplant in history. She doesn't look a thing like she did prior to the horrific incident that caused her injuries. She will still need a bunch of surgeries to remove extra skin from her face so it doesn't have a bloated appearance. But, she is alive, can breathe, talk and see.
Honestly, if I saw her on the street I might initially judge. I would hope that, within seconds, I would realize that EVERYONE is beautiful. I would hope I would realize that the fact that this woman is alive is amazing and that makes HER amazing.

So, what does this have to do with health and fitness?
Well, do you judge YOURSELF every day in the mirror? I bet many of you do. Do you see yourself as gorgeous or do you pick on every 'bad' thing you think you see?
Look at the list above...
One of those kids on the skateboard is someone's child and is beloved to their parents. So, they are wearing pants with the crotch down to the knees...so what?!
Those folks with all the tats? Well, to many, tattoos are amazing expressions of art they are simply wearing on their bodies. Or, they are meaningful expressions of loss, joy or pain.
When that person who limps take a minute to cross in front of you, holding you up from getting into the store, don't be mad...you have no idea what accident or condition that person has that causes it. They aren't walking slowly to annoy you-be kind.
And, when you look at YOURSELF try not to see all your faults and perceived imperfections. Remember, that body allowed you to have your children, gets you up to dance with us, allows you to get where you're going and do what you want to do. So you're not a size 00 and 5' 11" tall, so you don't have 'perfect' hair, so you are thicker in the middle that you want...who cares?!
Focus on all that you DO have and workout to make your body stronger and more healthy and to live longer.
Be kind to yourself and that will extend to others...and come back to you in kind!

Paws 4 a Cure..

HI All,

I remember back in the 'day' when it was just Karen and I teaching (is that right or is it Karen and me...whatevs) classes that I longed for the day when we'd have a bunch of FAB instructors working with us.

Well, now we do and not only do they make it possible for us to have 30 classes a week for all of you, but they also surprise me now and again with how much they care for us as people.

During Ally's illness, you'll all remember my posts and I will always remember your kindness, generosity of spirit and prayers. You all carried us through and our FAB instructors made sure I could be at home more to spend those last precious months with my baby.

At that time, I thought there should be a support group for dog parents whose kids have cancer. Well, thanks to Jill I now know that there is!

Jill sent me the link as they are hosting a walk to fight canine cancer at the end of May. She thought of us immediately and thought we would like to walk with Lilly, in memory of Ally. And of course she was right!

Since she told me about this today, I have been in contact with Keri, the group's Director and learned her story. She started Paws 4 a Cure in memory of her Chow Chow, Nikko. She and I have shared quite a few emails today and she, like we, would have sold a kidney to pay for Nikko's treatment.

I know we have many dog (and other animal) lovers in our group and I'm going to ask you to visit the site and consider walking-if not in memory of a pet of your own, then for Ally. Many of you met her and she was a spirit that touched everyone she met. I want to support this organization as they not only support pet parents but they also help those who cannot pay for their pet's treatment with monetary support.

Words can never express what it meant to us to have you support us during Ally's illness-let's make sure other pet parents get that same support from this great organization!

See you in class!

It's the little things...

Hi All,
I was going to title this post, "You know how some days just s*ck it?" but as I logged in I thoughts of the title I used, "It's the little things..."

It's the little things than can really make or break your day, you know?
Things that can MAKE your day:
-Getting all green lights
-Having your coffee made particularly well at DD
-Having a really nice technician at the car dealer when you're in for scheduled maintenance (and he gives you 10% off the stuff that came up that was NOT scheduled...)
-Getting REALLY nice compliments on your class when you thought it was just mediocore (and you then remember it's NOT about YOU, it 's about the clients, DUH!)
-Your puppy cuddling up on your feet while you work
-Meeting a bud for lunch

Things that can BREAK your day:
-Dropping your car keys like 20 times in a 5 minute period
-Being in a ridiculously long line at DD (though, see above)
-Forgetting your rain hat in the car left at the dealer when it's been in your purse on every sunny day...SIGH
-The stiffness in your joints on what feels like the coldest most raw day of forever!
-Fighting with aforementioned bud yesterday (thank God that's over)
-Thinking you unlocked the lift gate on the loaner car and having to go back in, in the rain to get the darn key!

All little things, but certainly with a different feeling! (Of course the fighting part was NOT little)

Hot tips!

HI All,
Well TODAY is summer! (Tomorrow, back to Spring)
Let's talk about some *hot* tips for working out and staying cool and comfy all summer long!
1. Come to class. We are fully air conditioned and we will offer our 30 classes a week all summer. There's really no excuse for not working out ALL YEAR LONG! *And, if you miss class, you'll miss out on earning the FAB summer tote bag (see the bulletin board for a pic)
2. The sun does not suck fat off your body. We all feel vibrant after a day outside in the sunny weather but, remember, you must get your heart rate up into your target range at least 20 minutes per day and, for that, you need a class here. Think about adjusting your schedule and coming to our FAB 6am classes Tu,Th or Friday. Or, if you can, try out our 8am classes M,Tu or Th...these classes will help you get your workouts in EARLY in the day and you'll have the rest of the day to lay on the beach, by the pool or at the ice cream stand.
Or, how about 7:30pm Tu or Th? Have a full day of sun and sand and then come to class!
3. Drink plenty of water. You need to drink throughout the day, every day. Iced coffees and lattes do not count has hydrating your body. Though we have the A/C, you still need to be fully hydrating when attending class. Plus, hydration will keep you from getting fatigued all day long.
4. Wear sunscreen. This should be a no brainer. Sunroofs are open, we're cooking outside, gardening...so don't forget to slather on the sunscreen and do it every couple of hours too! (Not just once a day)
5. Get errands done early in the day. Today is a perfect example of the need to get errands (or your workout) done early in the day. It was literally 86 degrees by 9am today, so I was up and out early. This helps save gas in your car and your energy too.
6. Go enjoy some ice cream or frozen yoghurt . Take a moment, grab the family and go off and get your favorite frozen treat! (and, don't forget the pets...check your local grocer's freezer for 'ice cream' treats they can have too)
Enjoy the weather!

Tim Roberts/ACS benefit

HI All,
We had a GREAT time yesterday at the Milford Jazz Center working out with Tim Roberts and raising money for the American Cancer society!
Here are some pics:

Thanks to all who attended. We raised almost $5k for Cancer Research!
See you all in class!

PSA

Dear Drivers on Parkhurst Rd (coming towards Rte. 4 lights),
When you are turning LEFT onto Rte. 4 YOU do not have the right of way, the driver coming towards the lights, crossing Rte. 4 and getting onto Parkhurst Road does.
Again, YOU do not.
If you turn LEFT, crossing someone's lane of traffic at ANY intersection the person going STRAIGHT through has the right of way...NOT YOU.
Please stop trying to play russian roulette with yourselves but turning left in front of an SUV that could squash you like a bug.
K?
THANKS

Holidays and Family...

Hi All,
As you all know, we all get together to at the big "J" to exercise, laugh and dance off any stress from these lovely things we call 'family holidays'...in our minds, we always hope for that 'Norman Rockwell' holiday of wonderful food, conversation and laughs. In reality...not so much.
I talked to a few of my friends today and, whether they celebrated Easter or Passover, they have a story.
For the most part, my girlfriends have issues with their Moms. Oh, we all love our Moms, but Mom tends to, shall we say, 'nitpick' when it comes to holiday time. What you're wearing, cooking, how the kids are dressed...pick pick pick. I always find it interesting that my Mom (and others) will profess how irritated they were by their own Moms or MILs nitpicking, yet they still do it to us.
Or, my friends find that they have the whole clan over, work all day (and days before) cleaning, cooking and all and no one lifts a finger to help so the hostess is left exhausted and not really enjoying the day.
Now, I don't have some sage advice or anything, but I like to KISS. (Keep It Simple Sista)
-No elaborate 12 page "Martha Stewart" recipes
-Stop making 12 vegetables, 3 starches, 2 entrees, 27 appetizers and 8 desserts
-Stop hauling out the BEST china (use it every day instead, why save it?) and use the LEAST amount of dishes possible. Is the world going to end if you serve appetizers or desserts on paper plates? NO.
-Get only the house spaces clean that folks will see and stop worrying about cleaning out YOUR closet in case your Mother goes up there...she won't and if she does, who cares!!??
-Remember that your family really wants your TIME so if you spend it in the kitchen, running back and forth trying to do dishes while your company is still there-they'll never see you and you will never enjoy the time
-Prepare as much as you can BEFOREhand so you can sit and enjoy yourself on that special day (many things CAN be made ahead, even I know that!)
Our next big holiday is Memorial Day. Thank God it's a 'cookout' kind of holiday and having people over for that is a breeze. 'KISS' and enjoy that upcoming first weekend of Summer!

Pirates? What's next, locust?

Hi All,
First, everyone is doing GREAT on Jazz it Off! You guys rock! Keep up the good work, we're in the home stretch and we can't wait to see who has lost the most inches this time around!
Second, pirates are in the news. Pirates people. Now, I realize this is a real problem in the African area of the world and I certainly don't mean to belittle that. But it seems recently that you think you've 'heard it all' and then you hear something like pirates in the news. I mean, it's the LEAD STORY on the Today Show.
Oh and wassup with all these people calling 911 when the fast food restaurant is out of chicken nuggets. Or when they believe they've locked themselves INSIDE their car when they simply need to lift the door lock and get the heck OUT of the car!????
People are all, "Uh they have no chicken nuggets and they are trying to force a double cheeseburger on me."
Seriously...
Let's review...
911 is for REAL emergencies. You think you're having a heart attack, call 911. You witness a crime or are in an accident, again 911. You wake up in the middle of the night and think someone's in your home, call 911.
You do NOT call 911 for the following:
-Lack of your particular high fat, high calorie food at Mickey D's
-CVS is out of mini eggs
-Your mother is trying to guilt you into having holiday dinner at your house
-Your kids keep screaming "Mom" and following you so closely you cannot go to the bathroom alone
-Your J instructor is doing 'that routine' again and you simply hate it
-Your husband will not remember to take out the trash
-You forget where you parked your car at the mall
-A Facebook quiz gives you a weird name you cannot imagine 'should have been' yours
Hopefully, you get the point...I'm sure you do.
Now, if you see locust-CALL! (I kid, I kid...)

Walking and chewing gum at the same time...

Hi All,
Well, how about walking and talking on the cellphone at the same time?
Here's my question...what is the friggin' point of walking for exercise (which I feel, as you know, really isn't EXERCISE, unless you walk and get your heart rate up as high as you do in class) when all you're really doing is walking and talking on the cellphone?
Every single day I am driving around doing many errands, etc. for the Center and for my family. Daily, I see folks who are walking through my neighborhood and others just talking on the phone.
These people are overweight and 'think' they are exercising. The only wakeup call they're going to get is when they have that heart attack and they'll be all, "Hey, I exercise every day." Uh, no you do not. You walk around the block talking on the phone, which means you're not getting heart rate up if you can have a FULL BLOWN conversation while you're doing it. Is it better than sitting on your arse talking on the phone? Sure, but just barely.
Oh and that brings up another point...related to class.
If we are at the top of the aerobic curve and you are having a full blown convo with your neighbor then here's what happening in your body:
Nada
Nothing
You are NOT WORKING hard enough.
Oh and you're being rude to those around you.
And you're not burning fat.
Now, we're not talking about a quick WOO HOO or comment like "I hate this routine" or "I love this routine"...we're talking about a FULL BLOWN convo.
You are never going to get your heart rate up TOO high in class...our aerobic curve and the skill of our instructors make sure of that. So push yourself...focus on what you're doing and talk to your friends later. They'll still be there.
Oh and so will you because you worked hard, actually GOT fit and will be able to enjoy years and years of chatting with your friends, sitting on your arse and not feeling the least bit bad...you already GOT a real workout here!

The odessey of the new oven...

Ok, so my post this AM was 'All's quiet', right? Well, it remained quiet at the Center today, except during class when we were all rockin' and working hard!
At home?
Not so much.
As you may know, our oven (range, whatever you call it-we have the stove top and oven in 1 unit) went kaput this week. They said they could deliver the new one today between 12-3.
Now, when I say I'm doing something between 12-3 you can bet I will be there DURING those hours or I will promptly call you to tell you I'll be late. Yeah, well, they arrived at 4:30pm. Whatevs...
They removed old, decrepid oven (range, whatever) and brought beautiful new one in. (We got a great deal, top of the line but last year's model so 50% off!)
Beautiful new one...one side of control panel not working. (it's digital) They called the office who told me I had to wait until Monday for a new one since this controls everything-UH NO. I talked to the office they said "They'll be right back with a new one." You got that right buster.
1 hour later, another new one shows up-same problem as the first one.
Technician now called...tech walks delivery guy (who is REALLY nice BTW) through taking back off to check something 'kitschy' on this model and that IS the problem. QUICKLY fixed and we're set.
It's now 6pm.
Now?
Chicken is FINALLY in the oven, Lilly is sleeping under my chair and I'm about to take a pic of the new oven for posterity.
Oh and BONUS...it has a convection feature so that Thanksgiving turkey will be done in record time this year!
YIPPEE.

All's quiet...for now

HI All,
I know lots of you had challenges yesterday...it was one of those days when it seems nothing goes right.
Here at the big "J", that meant that precisely as the afternoon class was about to begin, the toilets decided to stop working. We've had issues before because a certain food establishment in our mall does NOT follow the rules for disposing of their, ahem, GREASE and it backs up our toilets. Yesterday, it happened again.
I will say, we've had a few months reprieve but if it starts up again regularly, I knwo our landlord will be upset (not with us).
In any case, the plumber got here by 5:30pm-thank God because I had visions of being here late, with Lilly...waiting for them to arrive.
Then, of course, our computer inexplicably FROZE and had to literally be unplugged to reboot. Good Lord. It was thundering and lightning outside and I was just hoping there'd be power for JF's class.
There was. Toilets working, computer working so, so far...all's quiet.
Here's hoping it stays that way!
