Christmas/Hanukkah 2008

It's Christmas Day and all is quiet in the house. I have a bad cold, so our friends really couldn't come last night-(since I get a cold only every few years, the one I get is a doozy!). So it was my MIL, Mr. P&P, Lilly and me for prime rib, scalloped potatoes and a kick a** chocolate mousse cake from WF. (Oh and asparagus too) Our tree is below and, yes, we DO get it online from the fabulous Weir Tree Farm. It's full, fab and smells like a dream!

Today? My MIL will be visiting with my SIL and BIL later so she's home. Mr. P&P and Lilly are napping and I'm watching White Christmas. Later, turkey, mashed potatoes (a Mr. P&P exclusive recipe) and some salad....oh and some more pastries from WF!

Santa/Hanukkah Harry were very good to us...

Lilly got a stocking full of toys (see pic above), Mr. P&P got a snazzy new radar detector for his snazzy sporty car and some clothes, a new suitcase for his work travels and some dark chocolate. I received a beautiful wallet from my favorite store leather goods maker (C) and a really fancy schmancy digital photo frame. It's all set up with a photo stream of Ally, Lilly and some J stuff too. I love it.
I saw K, Little K and Little Mista on Xmas eve and everyone loved their gifts. I usually get K some 'work' clothes (since no one else seems to think of it, though she needs new stuff for class...) and she loved each item. Little K went NUTS over her Uggs...she'll get chocolate colored ones next year (shh...) from our friends in Australia. Little Mista loved his building set and digital watch-he's getting so grown up! They got me a beautiful memorial ornament in honor of Ally which I loved and a nice Itunes card!
We made it a low key Christmas/Hanukkah this year...I think it's really terrific, keeping it simple and not focusing on 'buying'...spending time with those you love and really enjoying the time is most important and it feels good to focus on those things. That's a tradition I can really get behind!

On a side note, we have Ally's ashes home and here's a pic of our little memorial for her. That poem is the 'Rainbow Bridge'. We wanted a place of honor for her in our home and now we have it! Having her 'home' for Xmas was important and we are thankful we were able to do that!
Well, it's time to wake up the family from their naps and get cracking on that turkey...
We hope you all had a wonderful day (or week for those celebrating Hanukkah) and are enjoying a relaxing time.
See you in class this weekend so we can all work off all this great food!

Happy Hanukkah and Merry Christmas

Ok, tomorrow promises to be nuts (last minute running around) and I'll be home with the fam after 1pm or so (seeing K and the kids to give them their gifts around lunchtime). I figured I'd send you our holiday wishes now...

At this time of year we always reflect on the year and it's been another wild ride but one we certainly wouldn't have missed. K and I feel very blessed to be able to do something we truly love for our work. We are living our dream and it truly is something we are thankful and grateful for.
We want to thank you for your support all year, the joy you bring to our lives, the love and care you surround us with when we are in pain and the smiles you bring to us in class every day.

We also want to recognize our fabulous staff. Without Liz, Tammy, Patty, Kristen, Jessica, Lyn, Jill, Kara, Maripat and Tina we certainly couldn't do what we do. And if not for all our wonderful class managers, babysitters and the wonderful lady who cleans our Center, we wouldn't have time to devote to, not only our business, but our families as well.

2009 promises us our 15th year of business and we look forward to sharing every minute of it with all of you!
Here's to happiness, health, joy and love in the New Year.
We love you all.
XOXO

Yeah, I'm over it...

Winter that is. It's one day old and I'm o-v-e-r it.

Yeah, this is our street. There's 2 friggin' feet of snow on it.

We've had to cancel more classes in the last 3 weeks than we have in 15 years of business.

The weather gurus said we wouldn't get as much snow Sunday as we did Friday...liars.

Can you tell how happy I am about this?

NOT.

On the bright side, we retained power during all this (I know many folks did not) and I feel lucky that we have Lilly in our lives to brighten then because, if we didn't, I think it might be way passed time to move home to SoCal. At least it's sunny here today!

Kudos to ALL those who came to classes Saturday and Sunday morning- you guys ROCK! I was so glad to see you all (even in my 'cold medicine' induced state)!!

See you tonight!

Batten down the hatches...

More snow on the way!
Ok, so far the weather gurus say we aren't supposed to get as much as the south this time (but who the he** knows)...but it is time again for that time honored New England tradition...and what is that you ask?
That would be buying the grocery stores out of every gallon of water and loaf of bread there is. Seriously.
I used to live in W. Rox, the site of the Roche Bros. where Channel 4 normally films their 'storm prep' segments. You know, those segments where the reporter is standing in the bread aisle and there's literally 1 loaf of Jewish rye left in the entire aisle.
I have also been in line behind an elderly lady who had only bread and water in her cart. That's right-about 20 gallons of water and 20 loaves of bread. Is she running a prison? Does she have the turkey, cheese and such at home already?
Now, I'm all for getting ready for possibly being stuck at home for a few days but seriously...bread and water?
What do YOU stock in your home for those snow days?
In our house:
-plenty of puppy food and treats
-Water (but not 20 gallons worth)
-Bread and sandwich fixings
-Make sure there's gas in the gas grill in case we need it to cook on
-TP and paper towels
-Firewood, in case we need to fireplace to keep warm
We bring a cooler into the house in case we need to unload some of the refrig food. If we have to, that then goes onto our deck (where it's freezing cold and snowing) to act as our 'frig'.
-OJ, milk (see cooler trick for how we keep it cold if the power is out)
-A pasta dish that can be eaten cold if necessary
Pretty much that is it for us. Since we're due for a storm tomorrow night and Sunday night-we're fully stocked.
And, thank God, Lilly loves snow and doesn't mind doing her business in it!
Stay warm and we WILL see you in class Saturday and Sunday!

A holiday gift idea for your man??!!

Yes, that's right. There's now a perfume called 'Flame', reportedly scented like a BK Whopper.
Uh, why?
And if these people money why didn't I think of this?!!
Truly, I think this may be the sign of the Apocalypse people.
I bet they sell it in the same stories as the Chia.
Lord.

Ice Storm 2008, etc.

Good Monday morning...
We know some of you still don't have power at home and may be reading from work or the library...we pray you get power soon and can, once again, be safe and warm at home.

**Since the Chelm. schools are closed, remember that means we have NO AM classes. PM classes are ON! This is the 'regular snow day' schedule and will continue until the schools reopen.**

Here are some pics of our front yard area after the storm (we lucked out and didn't lose power at all).

Again, we know how lucky we are. Many trees were lost, but no property damaged.

And, for fun, here's an updated pic of the fabulous Lilly! (She's getting the 'potty outside thing' down, most of the time and is sleeping very well!) She's grown already and celebrated one week at home by spending the day with Daddy!

See you all this afternoon/evening in class!

Up and at 'em

Yes, that's right....as of 4pm today we have POWER at the Center!
See you Sunday!

Friday, December 12, 2008

Who feels like a popsicle??? Hmmm?

Well, as of 5pm EST today we have no power at the Center. We hope to be back online tomorrow (Saturday). Check the website and/or the phone for info after 7am tomorrow.
If you've got power, chime in here...or email us.
***Holiday Bazaar will be Friday, 12/19***
We are thinking of everyone and just grateful everyone is ok.
The lowdown from our house:
Lilly is doing well doing #1 outside, #2 is still in progress. She is getting used to her car crate and sleeps while Mom does errands. She also LOVES the big "J" and all the attention you all give her! She sleeps through the night and is the joy of our lives. We miss her big sis, Ally, but we see bits of her in Lilly every day. It's the same sassy personality and cuddly nature!
The Mountain is closed so Mr. P&P will be home with Lilly tomorrow while I (hopefully) teach and (definitely) get my hair done. Tis true, I only do highlights as I currently have 6 grey hairs all of which have K's name on them. I lucked out in the 'not turning grey early' department.
There are trees down on our property (we live in a townhome) and the guys were here chainsawing them off the walkways and driveways and our private road. We can move around and get to our garage. Our neighbor had a tree go through their garage, no damage to the cars though-thank God. They tell us a tree guy is coming (probably tomorrow) to start really cutting up the big trees. Free firewood-YIPPEE!
Chime in on your situation if you can and please PRAY we can have class tomorrow!
Stay safe and warm!

Holy Ice storm Batman!

Ok, so it poured rain all yesterday and turned to ice last night. Now (6:30am Friday), there are trees down on our property and our big, beautiful jasmine bush is kaput.
No power at the Center and MB couldn't even get there to teach anyway, given the trees and power lines down.
At least K's toe can have another day of rest!
All area schools (and I do mean ALL of them) are closed...although I don't know why Channel 7 isn't reporting our schools yet!
It's still pouring rain/icy rain-what fun! (NOT)
Check our website after 3pm regarding the afternoon/evening classes. If we have power, we'll be there. (Which we should, since the McD's across the street had power and that's a good sign)
Holiday Bazaar? Again, power and we're there!
Be safe!

Favorite Holiday treats

Ladies (and Gents),
First, a quick Lilly update:
She's doing much better in her crate overnight now that we've put the crate up so she can see her Daddy while she's sleeping. Mr. P&P is staying downstairs with her for now, until she acclimates to her crate and her new home...
She did well last night during my class and I think everyone oogled and aahed over her (thank you!). She is certainly loving the attention.
She still isn't wild about being in the crate, in the car...but it's for safety!
Second, let's chat about your favorite holiday treats (you know, those things you really just indulge in at holiday time).
Mine favs are:
-Fudge. I really don't eat it any other time of the year...thank God, right?
-Bacon. Weird, I know. I really only eat it Xmas morning, at our holiday staff brunch and possibly once on vacation. I love it but, sadly, my arteries do not!
-Mashed potatoes. Again, we really only have these Thanksgiving day, possibly Xmas day and maybe 1x during the year. Mr. P&P makes killer mashed potatoes and I could eat an entire bowlful-but I do not!
-Rolls with dinner. I banish rolls at restaurants (and any other bread since I live with 'bread boy') but for holiday dinners we'll do reduced fat crescents (from the Pillsbury doughboy). Not healthy...but yummy once in awhile.

Chime in with your favs and/or if you have a good 'holiday time' recipe to share!
See you in class!

It's a girl!

Friends and Family,

Here's our new addition...

Lilly! (It's a takeoff of Ally's name-kind of like "Little Ally")...definitely a tribute to her!

Thank you for your kindness and love as we continue to miss Ally and welcome our new baby, Lilly!

She's sweet and sassy...

Above pics are:

1st play at home
1st nap

1st "walk"

and 1st pic with Momma!

Two posts in 1 day-why...yes!

Hi All,
It's spitting rain and threatening to spit snow later this week...so as I sit here with my sets done for the weekend I was thinking...
I took a huge load of food over to the Food Pantry today and I wanted to thank all of you. They are in such severe need and you all (as usual) step up to the plate in a big way. You all rock!
You also rock for bringing in a load of toys (so far, you still have until NEXT Thursday) for Toys for Tots. We are going to make a lot of kids smile this holiday and we should all feel good about that!
Oh and lest we forget our Coats for Kids drive...I've taken over 12 bags FULL of coats. We've got until the end of the year-so keep it up! Let's get our closets clean and keep those less fortunate warm this winter!
So, as I was thinking about all we've done so far this year (HeartWalk, charity events, etc.) I wanted you all to know that your generosity never goes unnoticed. Times are tough for us all but when you open your heart you open yourself up to GET much more than you give and you all clearly understand that.
We are proud to know all of you and have you as part of our family.
Thank you so much and let's keep the Toys, food and coats coming!

Rudolph the Red Nosed Minivan?????

Ok people...
WTF is up with putting a red nose on the grill of your car and putting little reindeer antlers on the windows effectively turning your minivan into Rudolph?
Seriously.
I've yet to see a car sporting a wreath strapped to the grill but I know it's coming.
Oh and don't forget to send in your photos of your insane neighbors with their menagerie of huge inflatables on their lawns.
I cannot wait to see what you come up with.
Best photo (aka pic with the most inflatables in 1 yard) wins a prize!

Traditional holiday TV specials

HI All,
Well, it's December 2nd and last night 'Shrek the Halls' was on (I guess that's a new one) and the traditional 'cartoon' version of the Grinch. Did you watch? I love the Grinch? Karen can make that 'smile' of his that curls up her mouth just at the sides and it's truly frightening (in a good way)!!
What specials/movies/shows do you look forward to during this holiday season?
Mr. P&P's fave is White Christmas. We watch it every Xmas day after breakfast. It's really a nice movie!
So, chime in with your faves!

In memory of Ally

Here's one of the last pics of our beloved Ally.

Thank you all again for all the love and support during her illness and loss.

Melange of topics...

Ah, the day before Thanksgiving...it's sunny, but still a bit cold (and I consider anything less than 55 degrees cold, BTW).
The parking lots of local grocery stores are packed (and that's an understatement). Thankfully, I did my shopping yesterday and simply picked up our WF turkey and then proceeded to SB Farms (local farm stand) to get my pies-one of which will be given away tomorrow morning during our 14th Annual Thanksgiving class! So, I drove by the packed parking lots, filled with angry folks awaiting a parking spot! YIPPEE. I hope you are not in one of those cars, cursing as you wait for a spot!
Why is it that we buy an amount of food to feed an army (whether or not an army is actually coming to your home to eat)? We had a visiting client from Europe who asked me if the stores would be closed all week-she saw so much food being purchased she couldn't believe the store was actually simply closed for 1 day.
Friday begins the always insane holiday shopping season and, frankly, I think it's almost (note I said 'almost') a good thing we're all having to be more mindful of what we spend this year. I know it's been said many times, but folks are way too focused on what to buy, how much of it and spending themselves into debt to 'impress' their friends and family. We all want to give wonderful things to those we love, but at what cost? As I've said before, we're all in this together, so let's pledge (before you get up at MIDNIGHT to go to the Wrentham outlets) to not charge things or to at least be careful with amount put on the charge card. Really...our families want time with us, good memories and a nice gift-I think if each of us asked our families they would never want us to go into debt to give them anything.
It'll feel so good not to dread those January bills, won't it? And, even if you have plenty of disposable income (even now), spend less on gifts and give a bit more to charity. You'll get a tax break and really help folks who are less fortunate and, these days, it could be your neighbor-literally.
Tomorrow K and I will get to tell you all how thankful we are for the priviledge of doing something we truly love for a living. We are deeply grateful to each of you for your business throughout the years, bringing us your friends, showing up on THANKSGIVING to attend class and all the joy you give us each week. We know that many people never get to live their dreams and while it might seem silly to some-this was/is our dream.
I've said (written) it before, but I'll say it again...
We're just 2 friends who, over a pizza at Bertucci's in Newton, thought it would be fun to have our own Center. I believe it was K who said it first and I latched onto it like a vice. I'm nothing if not persistent, stubborn and one sighted when I have a goal. That idea planted the seed of what you see today. It was the first time in my life that I put together a goal (a big one) and achieved it. It opened so many doors, allowed me to meet so many wonderful people and has given me a healthier body than I ever imagined.
So to say we are thankful is a huge understatement.
See you all on Turkey day!

Happy Birthday Little K

Hi Everyone,
Uh, it's freezing out. Wassup with that?
Today Little K turns 12 and it's so hard to believe. I went over last night to give her her gifts (clothes, no more toys!) and K and I were remembering the day she was born. I was at work and even though I knew Mista was with her and they were safe at the hospital, I couldn't work. (I had a 'real job' back then...) I went home early and it was great to be out and be able to bring K her Diet Coke after Little K arrived on the scene. That's all K wanted-a huge Diet Coke!
She's such a grown up now-no more kids menu at Friendly's and all A's on that report card. She's witty, funny, smart and sporty-all the things that everyone who loves her hoped for her on that cloudy Tuesday in November 1996.
There's now some blushing when Mom talks about the boys in her class at school and thoughts of driving one day. There's excitement for being a real teenager next year at 13 for her and a bit of 'horror' for the adults in her life-if she's going to be 13 next year that makes us OLD!
But, all in all, it's certainly been a fun 12 years so far and I personally can't wait to watch the next 12 (ACK, that'll make her 24 and K and me...56!).
So, Happy Birthday Little K....I hope all your wishes come true!

BL episode this week

Happy Thursday all!
First, I'd like to thank those of you who have given us cards, emails and gifts to keep us strong after our loss this week. We appreciate you all so much and it really is helping us make it through. It's very hard, but we know that she is safe and happy. We hope to welcome a new baby into our home soon, never to replace our beloved Ally, but to share some of the love we have for her with another precious puppy.

Second, wassup with BL: Families this week? Huh? As you all know, I hate 2 faced people more than anything and Vicky is truly evil. I'm sorry, but that woman is willing to stab anyone in the back who gets in her way and if Heba thinks otherwise, she's an idiot. I have to say, this is very disheartening. Why? Because I talk about BL because there are usually lots of motivational moments that we can all learn from and the training techniques of Bob and Jillian work and can (in smaller doses) be applied here in the real world. To say this season is a bit disappointing is an understatement and both trainers have said as much.
Will I continue to watch? Yes, because I hope that Vicky sees herself on TV and is HORRIFIED by her own behaviour. She is mean spirited, conniving and rude. She is not there to get healthy and well, she is there to win money and screw anyone who gets in her way in the process. And, Vicky, should you stumble upon our little blog-please tell us that you were just 'playing' the game and aren't that person we see on the TV because, if you are, I feel sorry for Brady and your kids.
And to all of you...
Please remember that, as women, we need to stick together and support each other BUT that doesn't mean we leave the guys out. We are all in this world to be successful, healthy and happy and stepping on people to meet your own selfish goals is going to get you nowhere fast. You may 'win' in the short run but you will be a sad, pathetic shell in the long run.
I think that book and/or phrase "Everything I need to know I learned in kindergarten" is true-the golden rule, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" because, otherwise Karma is a bitch.

Thank you.

Today we pause to thank of all our Veteran's and those currently serving our Country all of the World.
We know that you sacrifice so that we can be free.
Though it doesn't seem like enough-thank you.
We will never forget.

Our best friend-Ally.

Mr. P&P wrote this when Ally was diagnosed with cancer in June. Today, God called Ally home and we will miss her and love her forever.

MY BEST FRIEND - ALLY

How do you describe your best friend?

In a chaotic world of too many things to do and never enough time to do them your best friend is always glad to see you, for however long.

There is never a bad moment, she is always happy to see you.

She is always waiting patiently at the door.

Never mad, never sad, she says hello and stands by you through thick and thin.

You could have had the worst day and she doesn’t care.

Here is true love and trust from your best friend.

She trusts you with her life and that trust is cherished.

She is loved as much as she loves.

That is how I describe my best friend, Ally!

Mom and Dad Love You Ally. We will do what ever it takes to get you better!!!

Love,

Mom & Dad

Here's to the dreamers...

Growing up, I always heard my Mom say my Dad was such a "Dreamer"...like it was a bad thing. Later, she called me the same thing and I never felt it was a negative. I have my feet securely on the ground, but I definitely dream. I always felt good that my Dad and I had that in common...pragmatic, yet not without a dream in our hearts.

If I wasn't a dreamer, we'd never have the wonderful Center you workout in each day. If I wasn't a dreamer, I'd never have become an instructor in the program I've loved since HS. If I wasn't a dreamer, our Center would not be as big or successful as it is-and I'm not done dreaming, BTW.

Today, a very public dream was realized. I think we all know the famous speech by Martin Luther King, Jr...."I have a dream..." He dreamed a much bigger dream than I ever have in my life but I still have always felt like I kind of knew what he meant, since I was always called a dreamer too.

I know well what it feels like to have your dreams realized, to truly live your dream. See...I'm living mine. I dreamed that when I met my very best friend, K, that we would one day open a fabulous Center together, teach the program we love and have scads of customers who loved our place as much as we did. I dreamed of instructors helping us (uh, we have 11 of them now-AWESOME) and of the day when we would go to our district meeting and be 'at the top'...instead of sitting in the back dreaming. So, our dream is realized and we KNOW how much that little dream means to us so we can only imagine what it's like for all those dreamers who watched a lifelong dream be realized today.

So, here's to the dreamers everywhere-NEVER STOP DREAMING!

ROCK the vote!

Ok everyone...
I hope you are all voting today. I know, it's been a long (and, some say, slightly ridiculous) campaign season(s), but we all need to turnout and vote.
So, as we say in class...
Stand up and fight for what you believe in-whatever it is. Each of us has the power to facilitate change, so let's go do it!
Mr. P&P voted before work today, around 7am (poll opening time) and when he was walking out (he was #2 in line) there were about 100 people at our polling place in line. Bring a book, bring a coffee...bring patience and remember, YOUR vote counts!

We'll see you all in class tonight and we can all feel good after doing our civic duty!

Ally update

Hi Everyone,
I wanted to wait until after her checkup at Tufts today...
We've had 2 rounds of the 'new chemo' and it seems to be working but it is hard to tell. Our oncologist says that the tumor doesn't look smaller but, given where it is, it's really tough to tell. Her appetite, energy and weight are stable (actually good!) and so we continue.
We know there's been positive change-because we SEE it in her.
Please continue the thoughts and prayers as they ARE working. We know so many of you ask about her, think about her and support us and we are SO thankful, we can't even tell you in words.
The oncologist is heartened by her condition and so are our own vets at the FABULOUS Countryside! Dr. Dawn, Dr. Brian, Dr. Jackie, Dr. Julie, Dr. Kerry, Dr. P.J...they've all taken such wonderful care of Ally. (Along with Joan, Mary and Lee of course!) We know that all the support Ally receives from us, her doctors and all her Jazzerfamily IS making a difference. LOVE is the strongest medicine there is so thank you, thank you, thank you for giving her so much and please, don't stop now...
We love you all.

Pet Peeves re-examined...

It's a cold, windy Wednesday...thank God we have potluck tonight to warm us up (after class warms us up of course!)!!
Yesterday, someone brought up one of their pet peeves, so I thought we'd go through a few:
-Not knocking on a bathroom door (public or semi-public) when it's closed. Here's the thing, unless you're in your own house, knock on the dang door. The lock may not work, someone may have forgotten to lock the door and unless you'd like to embarrass that person or yourself, you'd best knock.
-Leaving lights on as you leave a room. When you use the bathroom here at the Center, shut off the light, k? (Unless, of course, someone is right there waiting to go in...) I think we're all trying to save the planet nowadays so shut off the GD light when you're done. Thanks.
-If you're driving around looking for a street (and/or your Tom Tom has gone haywire...) please kindly pull the F over so the 10 cars behind you can proceed. You stopping at every street and/or driveway, looking for your friend's house and pretending you're the only person on the planet is, well, rude. Look behind you as you need to slow down and, if you see a line of cars behind you, again, pull the F over. I hate to tell you this, but you're not the only one on the road!
-If you work at CVS, DD, or any other fine establishment please ACKNOWLEDGE when a customer approaches your counter. Continuing your deep, philosophical discussion on whether or not you and your baby-daddy should go to karaoke tonight is NOT more important than waiting on said customer. And, not making eye contact does NOT mean we just walked up to the counter when YOU decide you're done with the aforementioned discussion and actually look at us. Oh and when I say "Excuse me, is anyone working at this counter?" Don't you DARE give me attitude. Last time I checked you are there to WAIT on customers, not converse with your homies. You can do that when folks stop coming to your establishment because of the lousy service. You'll have plenty of time to chat then. A simple "I'll be right with you" goes a long way.
-When you bump into someone you know from long ago and they say "HI" to you, say HI back. They're not looking to get into a long, drawn out convo with you, they're just saying HI. Pretending you don't know them, when you clearly do, is rude.
-When you're at the drive thru ATM, please look the F behind you once you're done with your transaction. If there's no one there-please feel free to sit there all day long cleaning out your pocketbook, sorting your receipts, feeding your toddler a snack and talking to your Mother on the celly. However, if there is a car behind you-MOVE the F out of the way. There really should NEVER be a time when I need to honk at you (after waiting about 10 minutes to make sure you are truly done with your transaction) to get you to realize you're not the only person on the planet today. Let's pay attention, shall we?
Ah, those are some good ones, aren't they?
If you have any, please feel free to comment!

Layaway...

Happy Friday all!
As you all know, we've been chatting about the 'old time' practice of layaway vs. credit cards. 20-somethings, this is where you go to the store, pick out your purchases and go to the 'layaway' desk and make a 'down payment' on your purchases, then go back weekly or monthly and pay them off, without interest. There is, sometimes, a layaway fee but, otherwise, once you pick them up you OWN them...outright! WOOHOO.
K*art is all about the layaway and I hear S*ars is too. (I believe they are now one and the same Company) TJ Max* has always done layaway I'm told and I'm sure other retailers are jumping on this bandwagon.
I've also found a website called elayaway.com where you can shop online retailers that allow you to do this online (no real 'popular' ones but a ton of choices!) with a checking account.
As we've said 'forever', personal responsibility is so important and if we all take the 'PR' to pay down our debt and not create more, our own lives will be better and, in turn, our world will be better.
So, let's all try *not* to charge this holiday season. And, just think...you won't be staring down that mailbox with the huge CC bills in January! (And maybe, instead, you can treat yourself to a spa day-paid for in cash!)
See you in class this weekend!

THE cookie recipe from Open House!

RICOTTA COOKIES

2 cups white sugar
2 sticks margarine
3 eggs
2 tsp. Baking soda
1 tsp. Baking powder
5 cups flour
1 lbs Ricotta cheese
1 tsp. vanilla

Mix sugar, margarine, eggs ricotta, vanilla in mixing bowl and use hand mixer. Then add flour, soda and powder. Mix well. Roll into a ball as big as a walnut. Bake at 350° for 15 minutes.

*I always end up adding more flour (1/2 cut to 1 cup (I usually end up adding about 1 cup)) to get the correct texture. The dough should not be sticky.

Frosting:

1 box powdered sugar (I always use more since cookie mix makes a large batch)
Add milk for consistency
1 tsp Anise (or other flavoring, I also like Almond extract). I also use flavoring to my liking. May be more than 1 tsp.

TV shows you'd never admit to watching but...

You do.
For me, it really started with the "Real Housewives of Orange County" (which is an oxymoron-since I'm from SoCal the 'real' part is what gets me! HA), continued with the "RH of NYC" and is now on to the "RH of Atlanta". The latter basically could be called "Mean Girls Grow Up". Boy, am I glad I don't know those girls!
Anyway...let's move on:
-Jon and Kate Plus 8...FAVE!
-Flipping Out (hopefully it comes back on)
-Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D list (hope it returns too)
So, if you're looking for a bit of time to 'escape' into a few shows that's make you glad you live in your own life-check those out!
And, post and add your own guilty pleasures on TV.
Oh and one show I'm getting into that I love for different reason? The Locater on WE. (Ok, I've spellchecked 3 times, is that the right spelling?)
Anyway, it's a great show and you will love it. It's a real life investigator who finds lost loved ones...check it out!
Well, it's a rainy, cold Wednesday-so I hope to see you ALL in class tonight!
Have a great day.

Everything old is new again...

Hello everyone!
Well, it's Monday and if you had to be out early this morning it was freezing! Some like this weather, some don't. I basically see it as a prelude (and pretty one) to what's to come-the dreaded snow. Anyway...
We've been chatting in class lately as to how to make all our 'Benjamins' go further. Here's some of the ideas and information:
-Xmas/Holiday club at your bank. Remember when you used to start an account, in October, for next holiday season? Well, do it again now! That way, next holiday season, you'll have all the money you need to spoil those kiddos. (and maybe yourself too...) And, consider starting an account to *save* for that plasma TV or new washer/dryer you want, instead of charging it. (Unless it's an emergency purchase...)
-Save your change. Yes...that's right. Clean out your pocketbook every night into a jar or bank. Have your SO and kids do the same. Then, every 3 months, stop by the Coins*ar machines located in some local grocery stores. These machines count the change and you can even choose to buy gift cards with the proceeds or get cash. If you choose cash, why not consider depositing it in the aforementioned account to save for that snazzy new TV for the house!?
-Most folks who attend class at our Center actually pay less than $4 per class. Did you know that? And, exercise goes a long way to keeping healthcare costs down. You will be out of work less (there's always the 'mental health' day, right?) and if you have co-pays or have an insurance plan that only pays partially for some items-this is saving you money! And, some medical associations now consider 'exercise' medicine!
-Shop at K*art! They have re-introduced traditional layaway! Remember layaway? Remember going into the store with your list, picking out the items you wanted (but couldn't pay for in full right now) and having the store stash them away as you paid each month? Then, once paid, you can waltz right in and pick up your purchases with no incoming bill looming in the mail!
Brilliant! And, it can't hurt to call/check in with your other favorite retailers and see if they're 'on the bus' with this great idea! (Because remember, when you buy on a credit card and don't pay the balance in full each month, you are actually paying MORE for your items than the ticket price with all that interest!)
-"Shop" in your own closet!! A novel idea, no? You know you have too many things...(I know I do) and do we really need all that stuff? Uh, no. So, before you go shopping for a new outfit, 'shop' in your closet! Pull anything out you haven't worn in 6 months. Be honest with yourself. Then, donate the things you're not wearing or, if they're really nice, bring them into one of the many consignment shops in our area. You can get cash you need, space you need and someone can get a great buy on your unused items! WIN-WIN!
(PS Don't forget our coat drive is going on now-so grab those coats no one in the family is wearing and donate them here!)
Anyway, share your ideas and look here often for more. Let's work together to make all our lives better as we step through these next few months!
See you in class!

Customer service!

Why the exclamation point? Because we think customer service is important!
As we all know, economic times are tough and we all need to do some belt tightening, whether it be major or minor. And, in our personal finances and our business finances...but that does *not* mean we decrease our customer service to you!
We think that a very high level of customer service is what we owe our valued customers for your loyalty and continued business! Simple!
I've noticed (as a consumer) that some other companies are embracing this and, well, some are not.
For instance, I've gotten an increase in 'cold' sales calls, even though all my numbers are listed on the 'do not call' listing.
And, some businesses I patronize are going above and beyond (D'A*ngelo's sandwiches, C*untryside Vet Hospital, O'Gra*y Insurance) and some are going, well, the opposite way (Quiz*o's, DD...).
Look, I don't know about you, but when times are tough I want to spend my hard earned money on things that are of value to me AND at places where I receive outstanding customer service! I will not waste my valuable time and money on businesses that don't offer me a good value and good service!
So, chime in on businesses that do WELL by you (not good English, I know...) and those that do BAD by you...so we can all gravitate to the GOOD ones!
Have a great weekend and see you all in class!

Money savings tips on groceries!

This comes from O's website and her show yesterday...good tips people!

Plan your meals and shopping lists around featured sale items.
Use your store's weekly sales ad flier to plan your menus for the week. Then, write your shopping list around the items and brands that are on sale.
Taking a few minutes to make a detailed plan will save you the time of making unplanned trips to the store during the week—which can ruin your budget.
Planning ahead also helps you avoid impulse shopping during your trip. Know how your stores' savings programs work.
Do they have "buy one, get one free" deals?
Do they double coupons?
Do they offer a store discount cards that gives you automatic discounts?
Do they have special store coupons?
Once you know your stores' rules, you can combine them to pay the lowest possible prices for your items, such as using two coupons with a "buy one, get one free" deal. Combining strategies can result in free items. Use grocery coupons, ideally when the item is on sale.
Buy the Sunday newspaper—75 percent of grocery coupons come from the newspaper. Buy two to three copies per week to save dramatically.
Go online—grocery stores often have their best deals and printable coupons on their websites.
Many stores offer electronic coupons that go directly on your store discount card. Stock up on common items when they hit their lowest price.
Don't buy a year's supply, just enough to last until the next sale (two to three weeks).
Boneless chicken is on sale every other week at Stephanie's grocery store, so she buys two weeks of boneless chicken every other week to store in her freezer. This habit saves her family of four $325 a year on this one item. Be flexible about brands and stores.
Buy the brand that's on sale with a coupon, or get the store brand if it's less expensive.
Shop at the store with the best prices for your items that week.

Jessica and Adam get married THIS Saturday!

Ok kids, as you start your life together here's some 'sage' advice:
-Always keep your sense of humor
-Know that you are a 'team' now. I know you were before, but now it's official
-In 5 years you'll be SO glad you're not 'out there' anymore dating
-Adam, you're a Jazzerspouse now-it comes with it's joys and challenges. We know you'll be a great one
-Jessica, all those cute things he does now might not seem so cute later but keep it in perspective (Adam, ditto for you)
Right now it's Wednesday and Jess is teaching her last 'single' class...
She's excited and happy and we cannot wait to see our beautiful bride...and dance to celebrate with you both on Saturday night.
We'll miss you as you jet to Hawaii for your honeymoon but enjoy yourselves, relax and have FUN!
Love and years of happiness to you both!

I may be a fitness instructor but...

I'm not an idiot.
The HeartWalk went well-we still need to drum up a bit more attendance but it'll come! We've raised a lot of money for a GREAT cause and you can still donate. Log onto www.heartwalk.kintera.org/merrimackvalley. Find our team and donate! THANKS

Now, why the title for today's blog?
Uh, yeah, the 'sound guy' from the Walk apparently thinks that a slightly blond (it is my real color but it's not the 'white' blond most folks think of, I think they call it 'dirty blond') fitness instructor is a moron and knows nothing about her mic. This was displayed in the snide comment, "Uh, is that a good battery you're using?"
Well, yes a**hole, it is.
Now, if YOU Mr. "I'm so important Sound Guy" could get DECENT speakers and MIX the sound so it doesn't distort and sound fuzzy, we'll be all set.
So if you could 'get on that' for next year, we'd appreciate it.
K?

Feeling the love...

We sent out our yearly "thank you" email to all who attended Open House (and for whom we have an email, if we do not have your email, stop by the desk and give it to us-NO spam and info about all the fun things happening...).
Folks have responded with glowing compliments about our staff and our event. It truly warms our hearts that you got a great workout, had fun and really felt and saw how much we, and our staff, love our jobs!
I think one of the best compliments I received was this one, from SW (a class manager of ours). She said, "A, you can really see and feel how much the instructors love the program, love working here and love their jobs! It comes right through when they're up on stage and it's awesome!" (paraphrasing just a bit here)
I loved that she shared that and that is 'the' feeling we always go for, every class, every day.
So thanks to all who attended and especially to those who wrote back and let us know your thoughts and feelings and just how the "J" makes you feel.
We've hit the mark and we will continue to do so...every day!
See you all in class!

Walking with heart!

Ladies and Gents...
Ah, Open House #14 is in the rear view mirror and boy was it fun! As you can see from the previous post, we had a huge crowd, lots of newbies and tons of laughs! Check out our dedicated website for even more pics! (Now that the upload is fixed!)
So, onto our biggest charity event of the year...the HeartWalk.
Join us this Saturday, October 4 for the 2nd Annual Merrimack Valley HeartWalk. We'll be on the Boulevard in Lowell warming up the crowd and manning our tent! So...stop by! Log onto www.heartwalk.kintera.org/merrimackvalley and locate our team to donate and join!
Why is this such a big deal for us?
Well, both K and I have fathers who have (or have had) heart disease. My uncle also is living with heart disease...
Many of you know that my Dad passed away, at the young age of 47 of a massive heart attack. I was only 16 and I remember the cardiologist telling us that he must have had it for years. At that time, quadruple bypasses were not done like they are now. Had they been, my Dad would have lived, just as my Uncle now does. While many advances have been made in fighting and treating heart disease, we're not there yet. Folks are still dying, every day, of heart disease and, let's remember, it's the #1 killer of American women!
So, join us this weekend. We will still have a full schedule of classes at the Center, but come by afterwards to walk or stop in and say HI...or log on and donate to this very important cause. One day, it might save YOU or someone you love from this killer disease!
Thanks!

It takes a village...

To run a Center.
On the heels of the last post, heralding the wonderfulness that is our instructor staff, we certainly don't want to forget the rest of our fabulous staff because we couldn't do it without them as well!
We have so many class managers it's really tough for me to name them all so I will just say that each one of them welcomes our customers, works our desk, straightens things up after class and backs us up during class. As instructors, we know that having good class managers in class, just in case of emergencies, makes our job easier! So thanks to all!
We have 2 fabulous babysitters who watch your little darlings during class, making it possible for Mom to stay fit and healthy!
We also have a wonderful customer who cleans our Center, making it spic and span each week and allowing K and I to concentrate on other things! Ah, that clean smell that greets us!
So, when you arrive for class and are greeted with a smile and a "How are you?" really look at that person. They started just like you did, dancing in class and loving the J...and they really care about you!
See you at Open House!

Cheaper by the Dozen

Ladies and Gents...
A dozen what? Eggs? (not for me!) Donuts? (ok, sometimes) Kids? Well sort of...
In an effort to not get too mushy on Open House day, I wanted to shout out to our FAB instructors (including K and me there are a dozen of us...get it??!!)

Liz-She is a dynamo. Period. She has a zest for life that I only hope to have, along with being fashionable and fabulous. Over the years, Liz has been an immeasurable help to us-from when we got our start to today. And we will never forget that.

Tammy-Giggles. That is what I understand her family calls her (half of whom attend classes here-thanks Tammy!) She is fun and funny with a strong foundation underneath. She's taken on classes that were rough and tough and put her positive foot forward every time. So, get yourselves out of bed early and check her out! Tammy has kept us out of a few 'pickles' over the years and, here again, we won't forget!

Kristen-Poised and professional, she brings education and knowledge together with her signature Country tunes! (with a side of NKOTB, right Kristen??) I remember watching her dance (over by the locker area) one day while I was sitting at the desk and thought...HMMM, she'd made a great instructor. I was right! She's always there to help, even after having taught (all day) to a lovely bunch of 4th graders at school! She's a gem!

Patty-Thoughtful and wise. She might have started teaching a bit (ahem) later in life, but she has taken to it like a duck to water. She has a razor sharp sense of humor and brings that, and much more, to every class! She's allowed us to have someone to rely upon to build our morning classes while K gets to do some valuable Mom stuff! We love her!

Lyn-Sweet. That really tells you all about Lynnie. She loves Buble and the old time tunes and mixes those with all the techno stuff. She is kind and generous and, right now, we're missing her. She's helped us out of afternoon jams with her smile! She'll be back soon and we can't wait!

Jill-2 long years. That's how long it took to convince this child she could teach. Lord. (teasing...) Was it worth the wait? Oh yeah. She's a financial whiz kid at work but she brings her terrific sense of humor (and stories of her life) to her classes. Friday nights will never be the same with Jill here. She's given so much to us already, we can't imagine the staff without her! Don't miss out on Friday nights with Jill!

Maripat-It's the quiet ones you have to watch out for! She's a quiet force to be reckoned with teaching our Friday early AM classes. She really bailed us out and between her family, teaching in Pepp and here-she's super busy but never is frazzled! Here again, show up EARLY and see just how Maripat rounds out our week!

Jessica-Wise beyond her years is how I'd describe Jess. She's cool, calm and collected and even though she started as a 'not so committed' (she's in class, she's out of class...right, Jess?) college student, she came back with a vengeance and only needed a bit of prodding to start teaching. All I can say is WHOA! She's powerful, fun and brings her youthful exuberance to every class. Soon to be married, we can't wait to see our beautiful bride! She's helped us keep up the pace of 30 classes a week and we are thrilled!

Kara-Special. Well, they're all special but Kara is a special Ed teacher in a HS all the while teaching here! That takes a really special person! I watched Kara in class for a few years, we saw her get married and settle in to married life and then...we pounced! She is fun and open and brings that special-ness to every class. She came at exactly the right time, allowing us to keep things going with our Lyn out for a bit!

Tina-Our 'baby'. She's our newest and has already been a HUGE help. K now has another person to help her so she can step back a bit and do all those Mommy things (and her own things) she wants/needs to do in the AM's. While I've always had tons of options to cover classes, Tina finally brings this to our AM's between Liz, Patty and Tina, K has her pick! Finally! Tina is strong and, while still learning, she certainly is doing a bang up job!

And finally...but in no way least:
K-What can I say about K? For such a long time I thought I was the one, standing in the background (you know, like that movie Beaches? One friend is 'out front' and the other one is more 'in the background'), but I was wrong. I used to watch her teach and hope I could do 'that'. The one in the background is the strong one, the one that holds things together, quietly (well, in this case not so quietly...). The one that always makes you feel like you have a 'safety net', someone to count on when the going gets really rough. While she certainly doesn't mind the spotlight (and I kind of do mind it), I get 'shoved' there a bit more often than she. I do all the PR stuff, get up and warmup the big crowds at charity events and get on local TV. Most of the time, I'm not sure why but I do know 1 thing FOR SURE-if it weren't for K, none of it would be possible.
To get really mushy for 1 second-she definitely is the 'wind' beneath the wings of this operation.
So while I will take the 'credit' for dreaming and driving forward to our Center location-everyone needs to know that K is the one who truly keeps me grounded and on the right track. And is usually right and cuter and younger. (And that will be the last time I admit all that! HAHA) (And she might add smarter to that list!)
The real point is-we do it together. We always have. Before we had all these fabulous women (more to come, by the way...) we did it as a duo. Now we are blessed to be able to leave our Center in the more than capable hands (and feet!) of the women listed here. That is a feeling hard to describe when I can be home, with my family, knowing that each of you is getting an awesome class-safe and sound with one of our wonderful Associates.
So girls, thanks. Presents for you (instructors) on Open House day. A small token of appreciation for not only teaching all those classes, but giving K and me peace of mind. And what's better than that?
Nothing!

Another year, another anxiety attack....

Well friends, it's Open House week (also known as 'busy has he** week)...it's a good busy though!
This is the week where I traditionally start wondering if anyone will even show up for Open House. Yes, that's right, every year I have nightmares of no customers showing and Judi arriving saying "THIS is a big, successful Center...I think not!"
Truly, we hope you come-and bring friends.
We have been here 14 years because of all of you. You come to class, you make us smile and laugh and we all get healthy together. It's so much fun and we are blessed to be able to do this for a living and we know it. We really do.
As told in the 'Whole sordid story' post, you know we really didn't plan for it to be this big. We thought maybe we'd have 15 classes or so, a few good instructors working for us and we only prayed we'd be in business this long.
What we got?
We got the space and landlord of our dreams, 30 classes, 11 of the most wonderful instructors we could ever ask for (and counting...)and class managers and babysitters that make the whole place hum like the well oiled machine we dreamed about.
In the early years, we had invitations made up for our Open House and sent them to colleagues (other Owners and our DM) and kept them for our memories. I think year 2's invitation said it best so we'll use it as our cyber-invite to one and all for this year too:

J-Center of Chelmsford
14th Annual Open House
Saturday, 9/27 8-12noon
"Come and join us as we celebrate another year of our dream."
"Your feet can learn the steps but only your spirit can dance."

We realize that very few people in this life get to live their dreams and we truly get that opportunity. It is a true honor to be able to do so and we cannot thank each of you enough for allowing us to do it.
So, when you see us on Saturday remember that the day is really to thank you for all that you have given us.
We are truly blessed.
See you in class!

Mockolate? I think notolate!

Ladies and Gents,
There is a true outrage I need to share with you. (I shared it with my classes this morning but you all must know this!)
Chocolate companies (including *ACK* Hershey's) are substituting vegetable oil for cocoa butter in some of their 'chocolate' products. You must now read your labels to make sure your precious chocolate isn't....mockolate!
Why are they doing this? It costs less to put the oil in there than real cocoa butter! ARRGGHH.
Forget worrying about trans fats...
Forget worrying about the gas prices...

PEOPLE THIS IS SERIOUS!
How can we possibly PMS properly (and come out of it properly) without real chocolate???? Hmmm????
We cannot.
Stand up for yourselves and chocolate lovers everywhere and refuse to buy 'mockolate' products-buy only real chocolate!
There!
Now everyone get to CVS (or Mrs. Nelson's) for some REAL American chocolate!

A bit of FUN

Ladies and Gents,
Here's a list of things *not* to do in class (remember, this is a funny...)
-Hold your breath and count to 20 during a Heavy routine
-Watch your feet while marching
-Convince yourself to hold your bladder during a standing leg routine with plies
-Laugh at the instructor's big ending as the music plays on
-Gulp a 44 ounce Mount*in Dew before class
-Scream, "Hey that's my spot!" when you see a brand new person in class
-Expect to have skinny legs after attending 1 week of classes
-Actually yell, "Hell to the no" when the instructors asks, "Did you have a good day?"
-Rush the stage when the instructor says, "Skip up and come and see me."
-Take class barefoot (that's old school and dangerous)
-Go over and start reading a magazine in between heavy routines at the top of the curve
-Start eating your snack during class
-Taking a cellphone call while laying on your mat during the floor work
-Scream out, "I hate this routine" at any point during class

Have a great day!

The whole 'sordid' story...

Did the title 'grab' your attention??? Hmmm?
As we come to our 14th Annual Open House, I thought I'd author a post on how this whole journey began...
Once upon a time a girl who'd done "J" since she was 17 moved to MA for school and, well, for a boy. (Wrong boy, BTW... but that's a whole other story!) Anyway, she gained 89lbs. and took 5 years away from the "J" to marry the wrong boy and gain all the weight. Good times.
Flash forward to 1990-new job, new life. The girl was losing weight but needed to add exercise to the nutrition part of weight loss. So, she looked up "J" in the Boston yellow pages and found the 800 number. Thank God. Started new job on Monday and went to "J" that night for the first time in 5 years.
Well, I thought I'd die (I didn't) but I did stand in back wearing a huge tee shirt and bike shorts (whoa, that was the style then...). The instructor asked me if I'd done it before and I said I had...I was there every class thereafter and after about 2 weeks of coming every class and arriving early, they made me a class manager.
Then, one of the other class managers was going to be certified and I thought, "Well, the instructor tells me I should do it and I think I can."
Flash forward to months later when my original instructor needed to resign to have her 2nd baby and I ended up in Newton "J". One night we met a sub instructor whom everyone called "The Olympic one". I wondered what the H that meant...(it was K, BTW and she had a 'Dorothy Hamil' do back then) I introduced myself and let her know I'd take any and all feedback on my movements for certification. She was liberal with her comments and very helpful. In less than 2 weeks, we were fast friends. Oh and she made sure everyone knew I was leaving EARLY that first night (it was my 30th bday) to have lobster with my family! (My face went red-but I laughed anyway). Little did I know that was only the 1st time she'd tease me.
Pizza after class, laughing, teasing(let's not forget the mudslides on weekends)...her busting my a** teaching me movement, cueing-all the stuff I needed to know (though I still want to know where carrying her bag to class, rewinding her cassettes (and, whoa, that's what we used back then) and getting her coffee had to do with teaching. She has yet to explain that! (haha)
She took me to classes everywhere and taught me what to do, what not to do, what to wear, what to say...she showed me, by her example, how to teach, really teach, how to connect with the students...She also taught me to drink coffee. Yes, that's right. I hadn't drank it at all until I was 30 and had to learn to keep up with her! (Though, as she'd say I drink that 'girly' coffee-hazelnut!)
In return, I put her back on the stage she started on, where she belongs! (Our Center was a Center WAY back when-not well managed but empty and I had my eye on it from day 1 to get K back up on that stage!) She thought we'd never get the space, she thought J, Inc. wouldn't allow us to go into Chelmsford (there were small classes held at the HS way back then) but lo and behold, they did. K's original video (before certification) was taken on our stage and I wanted her back there. She was the best instructor there when she worked at the 'old' place and we had a little bitty score to settle, right K?
Flash forward 15 years.
We've been through it all.
Marriages, kids, fights (more than we can count)...all to bring us to our Center. We started in a Church Hall in Westford with no parking, no A/C and about 12 customers. We moved to a dance studio (you can thank little K because if K didn't get pregnant with her, we might not have moved when we did-we needed A/C for the summer!) and grew our classes so big, people were dancing in the bathroom! (No kidding!) I had my eye on our Center all that time. I used to sit in the parking lot wondering if we could do it, watching the traffic pattern and dreaming about all the people who might see our place and come to class. We made our move at the perfect time, when the building was bought by a local man who was moving his daughter's liquor store from across the street. Mr. K, what would we do without you! (BTW, is daughter is now our landlord and she is the BEST!)
The first day I took our DM there the parking lot wasn't paved yet, every window was covered in mud and there were 4 businesses in the building. It was a mess. She looked at me and said, "Do you swear you can make this work?" And I swore we could. Did I think we could? I wasn't sure but I was sure I wanted to be in THAT space at THAT time. It just felt right. And, as you can see-it was.
Every single day was worth it. It was worth all the blood, sweat and, yes, many tears.
I took what I learned from K mentoring me, put my spin on it and have mentored 20 women to become instructors. We've grown from 11 classes a week to 30, from a manual system to computerized and from records and cassettes to ipods. We've grown from a single girl and her married best friend to a family of 4 and a married couple with 1 furry kid. We've grown from 29 year old silly girls into 44 year old silly women. And we did it all together.
The simple basis of our business has always been 2 friends who sat around Bertucci's in Newton one night and said, "Wouldn't it be cool if we had our own Center?"
And you know what? It is cool.
And now we give you our 14th Annual Open House.
It all started as an oh so simple conversation over pizza-and they said it wouldn't last.
Well, as the poster in our Center (signed to us by Judi when we opened says)
When they tell you that you can't
Show them that you can
When they tell you that you won't
Show them that you will
And when they tell you it's impossible...
Prove them wrong.
And if you know us-that about says it all!

The one in which I curse technology...sort of

Ladies and Gents,
Mini Ally update-we had a rough night last night and got into the doc first thing this AM...she is doing better now. It's still a rollercoaster so please continue to add her to your prayers and thoughts. We very much appreciate it!

Ok...Mr. P&P and I spent 7 hours here on Saturday upgrading the Center PC back to Windows XP. Good times...not. We had to install one service pack (so I could reload Itunes) that took 2 HOURS itself. Like I said...good times. Once I went to restore my data...no playlists. Uh, yeah that means classes. So, I spent 5 hours here yesterday setting it all back up...my record sets, classes, etc. More good times...not.
But, it's done.
And, so far so good.
Does the "J" custom software work? Uh, no. So we're on the laptop for now (not fully functioning but enough to get through a few days) and Tech Support called me today so we're on the road to fixing that.
What went easily?
MS Word, Excel, Publisher docs. Oh joy. Well, those are important but come on...
For those thinking of going from Windows 2000 (and you should) to XP or Vista...be mindful it takes the whole weekend.
Oh, and the Company I had planned to have do it? P*lum Choice??? They s*ck eggs big time. They would have come, for $200 and installed XP and done NOTHING else. No reload of any software, no drivers for printing, no nothing else.
Please note: "NO P*LUM CHOICE". When I inquired if they would reinstall for a price, answer is no. They would have walked out after 1 hour and left me to clean up the 'mess'...lovely.
So, we're set for class tonight, hopefully will have our fully functioning custom software by the time you all get here this afternoon...fingers crossed!
Ah, technology, it makes life easier and harder all at the same time!

School Daze

Ok folks, this is probably going to make me sound like I'm 100 and went to school in a one room school house on the 'prairie' but...
WTH is up with the school bus literally stopping every 50 feet to pick kids up at the end of their own driveways??? HMMM???
We had to walk to a 'central spot', maybe a few houses up and get the bus. (No, not up hill both ways or anything...HAHA)
I was driving Ally to an appointment this morning (she's doing well, BTW) and I was behind a school bus for a bit. No real problem, I was running early so I didn't really mind.
The thing that struck me was that I saw kids up the street standing in their driveways, not one house away from where the bus was stopped. Literally FEET away. The bus stopped at the first driveway, pulled their stop sign and lights in and moved up 2 houses and stopped in that driveway and so on.
Now, I do understand that our world is not as safe as it once was. But, why can't the parents (who are waiting IN their driveway with their child already) walk to their NEIGHBOR'S house and stand, all together, to wait for the bus so there is one stop, not 10????
Anyone?
Buehler?
Anyone???

Lies, Lies, Lies...yeah

Ladies (and Gents),
I lurk on a few chat boards (not really into posting) and some are 'J' chatboards and some are more general, like WW. There is a 'J' thread on the WW board and I love to read folks' comments.
Anyway, on the board there is a daily, nary I say it's multiple times per day, thread asking about C*rves. How many calories does it burn? Who does it? Who loves it? What about their new C*rves Smart system? This drives me nuts. First, there's a freakin' post on this daily so go back and read it. Better still? Could you guys make your own thread so we don't have to see the same posts day after day after flippin' day? Mmmkay? Thanks.
Ok, let me give it to you straight people (as well all know, that is my want, to give it to you straight...)....
C*rves doesn't burn the calories it claims. Absolutely not. If you are sitting on your arse and talking, you are N O T burning fat and calories. If that were the case, I'd be a skinny b*tch for sure. In fact, I might be so small I'd be mistaken for a 15 year old. As you see, that's not the case.
You are all smart folks-do not fall for false claims because, in the fitness industry, there's little regulation but we, exceed all the government and AFAA standards. 'They' do not.
If you want to burn fat and calories you must do 3 things:
-Cardio
-Strength
-Stretch
Duh...we've been doing this at the big 'J' for almost 40 years. Yes, that's right, since 1969.
You must M O V E your body.
You must pick up some sort of resistance (weights, tubes, use your own body weight).
You must stretch your muscles so they become more lean.
You cannot, I repeat, you cannot sit on your arse, in a flippin' circle and chat with your friends while halfheartedly moving your limbs on some machine, monitored by someone with ZERO physiology training, listening to the same mix of bad 80's music over and over and over again and lose weight.
So, you might say, "Uh, A, I've SEEN people start there and lose weight. What about that?"
Are these people deconditioned and/or have never exercised before?
Have you ever seen a relatively fit woman, between the ages of 18-70 go in there and tone up and lose that last 10 lbs??? HMMM???
I think not.
Look, every form of exercise is good for someone. This place that claims to allow you to 'amaze yourself' is full of it. They do not train their employees. They get 1 week of 'how to sell membership' training. (BTW, 'J' instructors are not trained in ANYTHING but dance technique and exercise physiology...) C*rves is great for folks who need to slowly acclimate their bodies to exercise. It's great for those who have significant weight to lose and are concerned about ANY impact on their joints initially. However, unless you are a hamster, you'll be bored out of your gord (spelling?) in no time!
But, you can come to the 'J' and start slowly too. You don't have to do any impact with us and you'll see folks of all shapes, sizes, ages and fitness levels. You'll see ladies who have never exercised in their lives next to ladies who are doing triathlons. You'll see size 0 ladies and size 24 ladies. You'll be safe with instructors who are trained how to modify movements so 99% of folks can do anything we do!
And you know what?
We're all dancing and having fun and getting healthier by the class.
So, please...enough of this 'you're burning 500 calories sitting in a GD circle chatting'...Remember what your Mama taught you-if it sounds to good to be true, it is.
Now get yourself to the J and have fun and be safe!

Merci Beaucoup...

Also known as 'Thank you' in English.
In a blog I love to read daily, the blogger is talking about the extinction of the 'smile back'. You know, when you smile at someone, in public that you do not know, and they smile back, or not.
It got me to thinking about the extinction of the 'thank you' when you hold the door open for someone coming or going out of a business or office building.
You know...when you are leaving Panera and you hold the door for the person coming out behind you, yet a few steps behind. It's a nice thing to do and, when someone does it for me, I say "Thank you".
What I cannot stand is when I hold the door for someone (and I mean when I am CLEARLY holding it for them, for instance I have to wait a couple seconds for them to 'catch up' to the door) and they say nothing. If I'm clearly holding the door for you, the nice thing to do is say "Thank you".
So, frankly, when someone doesn't say a word I say, "You're welcome".
Sometimes this illicits a response like, "Oh, thanks" and, sometimes, it illicits...nothing.
I say, let's make sure this doesn't become extinct like the 'smile back'...the next time someone holds a door for you say "Thank you" and pass it on!

Holy crap Batman...

Tom Brady is out FOR THE SEASON with a torn ACL.
Ok, which one of you (or your significant other) didn't wear their lucky:
1. Underwear
2. Jersey
3. Use your lucky mug
4. Eat the same lucky game day foods

People, it's time to pray...hard.
